X86 Hardware issues (Graphics, WiFi, Onboard Sound, external DACs, Disks, BIOS/UEFI Boot problems etc.)

:label: About
Please use this thread to post issues you encounter with typical X86 issues, like missing support for WiFi devices (onboard or dongles), onboard sound and DAC devices, disk devices etc.
Also if you encounter boot issues or other problems of which you assume they are x86-related, post them here first.
Issues which do not fit this thread will be redirected as a general help section post section.

** :orange_book: Reporting**
To help us locating and fixing issues, the following information is mandatory:

  • :point_right: the exact image version you are testing with (and please don’t write “latest”).
  • :point_right: whenever possible, the URL of the logfile you created with the log function from the dev page Howto: Send a log for a bug report
  • :point_right: when you have it: brand and model of your PC/ Notebook**
  • :point_right: output from either “sudo lshw” or “inxi -Fxxxz” (“lspci” optional)**

This should give us enough info to start with, mentioning the brand and model of the PC may help (inxi should report it, but does not always with “home builds” and “chinese cheaperware”).

:pushpin:Thread Issue Index :pushpin:

(202301102: Work-in-progress)

:point_right: Note
We try to cover as many x86 devices as possible.
But due to the vast amount of different x86 hardware configurations out there, there will always be some which won’t work without issues.
When encountering an issue, refer to the following list first before posting.

I just installed the latest beta version (Volumiobuster-3.111-2021-10-08-x86_amd64.img) an I am not able to get any sound output on SPDIF or HDMI.
I have checked in alsamixer that SPDIF is not muted:

Some info from my system:

My PC has several ALSA devices, but Playback Options panel only shows two (with the same name). In other words, audio cards are recognized but not the single devices. Is that how it is intended to be?

OK, this is a tough one, you have two physical sound cards?
(Not necessarily an issue, just trying to get a clear picture)
Could you please also share a log so I can see whether the onboard sound init script was triggered?

Howto create a log
Preferable from a fresh reboot

Either there is no card profile for your sound card yet (unlikely as HDA Intel PCH is a well known one) or the ALC898 is not initialised, need to check this. Thanks for the log, it should help.
What do you get from the dropdown list in the playback options?

I tried several times to install Volumio 3.114 on an external HDD, but the operation failed.

Would you be able to do small script editing with my support? Using ssh and nano?

Thanks for the info and logs.
It appears, that there is a problem with trying to remove the partition data from the “DS pocket pace 3”. The “undefined” is a bit cynical, there is no error code and no kernel message either. I’m stumped.
Is there a way for you to manually clean the partition table?

  • you have two physical sound cards?
There’s no physical card, it’s the on-board audio.

Log from a fresh reboot:
http://logs.volumio.org/volumiobuster/Ds5kEQi.html

This will take a little longer to analyse, the 2 sound cards have the same ID we use for identification.
Not sure how this is going to work, I recon you have linux skills and able to do some editing with nano? With my info?
Do you have an extra ATI graphics card then (would add an HDMI sound card)?

Yes, I can :+1:

If you tell me the CLI commands we may spare time…

There isn’t any other card installed, it’s just the mother board, the internal drives and the power supply.

Seen a lot of x86 configurations, but never seen this sound card combination
I’ll think of something, but time is running out for today.

You noticed, I moved your posts. Anything that reeks of x86-specific issues, report them in this thread please.
If it is general Volumio, I can always move it.

Ok :+1:

Just to be clear, the problem of the failed installation on an external HDD and the issue of the (apparently) two audio cards with the same name pertain to two different machines. I’m remarking just to avoid confusion… :slightly_smiling_face:

Thats ok, the issues are not related

Ok, I managed to install Volumio on the external HDD. I cleaned the partition table with this command:

sudo wipefs -a /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc: 8 bytes were erased at offset 0x00000200 (gpt): 45 46 49 20 50 41 52 54
/dev/sdc: 8 bytes were erased at offset 0xe8e0db5600 (gpt): 45 46 49 20 50 41 52 54
/dev/sdc: 2 bytes were erased at offset 0x000001fe (PMBR): 55 aa
/dev/sdc: calling ioctl to re-read partition table: Successo

Yeah, perfect approach
