X86 Hardware issues (Graphics, WiFi, Onboard Sound, external DACs, Disks, BIOS/UEFI Boot problems etc.)

No, we do our own kernel compilation, based on the LTS sources released by kernel.org.

We try to keep as close as possible to Ubuntu and Debian kernel configurations, but, as written the other day, we have not changed the sound configurations between 6.6 and 6.12, nothing except for wireless drivers and some extra sensor support.

You have a PM.

Im using Volumio X86 v4.0.73 with usb wifi dongle RTL8188FTV and i can’t connect to router from volumio GUI settings…
In network settings i can found available wifi network, put the password but no connection successfull…

from ssh running

sudo wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

the connection start and goes ok, he got ip from router and its visible in GUI interface network settings as active connection… i guess hardware driver is working.

This mean that volumio create wpa_suplicant file with wifi detail but is not operate from volumio settings GUI.

Any others have this bug?

I’d tryed another dongle also, old RT5370 and same issue…

Im momentary fix wifi issue with this method.

  1. Edit wpa configuration
sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

this is the code

ctrl_interface=DIR=/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
    ssid="Put your Wifi_ssid"
    psk="Put your wifi password"
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

Create a service for Wlan0

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant@wlan0.service

this is the code

[Unit]
Description=WPA supplicant for %i
After=network.target

[Service]
ExecStart=/sbin/wpa_supplicant -i %i -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Restart=always

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Enable the Service and start it

sudo systemctl enable wpa_supplicant@wlan0.service
sudo systemctl start wpa_supplicant@wlan0.service

Unfortunately we cannot accept a fix without more info. Wireless concerns all Volumio platforms, it is not x86-specific.
In order to help you, the Volumio team and community devs need all information as requested in the very first post of this thread.

you’re right, thread purpose is for x86, i’d shared log and lshw response, that’s all they need. wireless issue still here and volumio developer is not fixing it.

Sorry that you did not get my point. To be more precise, without you delivering the data as tequested, it is impossible to help you here.

what you’re talking about? i’d shared the log required. sorry

Iā€˜m really sorry, missed that

Please avoid making assumptions here, there’s some background you’re missing.
The RTL8188FTV simply can’t run hotspot and Wi‑Fi client at the same time.

The correct procedure is:

  • boot the device with eth0 connected
  • disable the hotspot
  • configure your Wi‑Fi normally
  • unplug eth0 and reboot

After that, Wi‑Fi will connect as expected. If it is still failing we need to take a closer look.

nope, sorry but your trick is not working.
when i put wifi password popup ā€œnetwork card correctly rebootedā€ but no connection show.
also rebooting without lan and put again wireless password, still the same.

This happens also with RT5370 usb adapter

Please upgrade to the latest version 4.080. We have spend a lot of hours on this subject.
Make sure to not manipulate any files.
If it is still failing post the following outputs:

systemctl status hostapd.service > /tmp/hostapd_service.txt
journalctl -u hostapd.service --no-pager > /tmp/journalctl_hostapd_service.txt
cat /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf > /tmp/hostapd_conf.txt
/tmp/wireless.log

Im using RT5370 usb adapter.
Thanks for support Wheaten.

I can’t enable WiFi in Volume 4. It only accepts wired network connection.

Error: Command failed:
sudo /bin/systemnctl restart
wireless.service Job for
wireless.service failed because the
service did not take the steps required
by its unit configuration. See
ā€œsystemctl status wireless.serviceā€ and
ā€œjournalctl -xeu wireless.serviceā€ for
details.

Can anyone offer me help? Can it be a bug? a driver?

My computer is based on an Intel X86 PC board

Greetings

Hi @gurusto

Could you please drop the details as mentioned in the openings post under:
:orange_book: Reporting

Without that info, we’re basically trying to solve a mystery with a thousand different x86 boards and fifty WiFi chips. That’s less ā€œtech supportā€ and more ā€œlottery of doom."

Help us help you, otherwise we’ll be stuck playing hardware bingo forever!

Thank you for responding.

The hardware worked well with V3. There was an error when installing the new V4 version.

As soon as I can, I’ll give you the full hardware relationship. Reinstall V3 and add system information to extract the device ratio.

CPU : i5-6500
GPU : NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti, HDMI connect to FHD TV
16G RAM
USB dongle ( 128G and 32G )
use diskpart clean the dongle then write image by win32img or rufus or etcher

Volumio-3.884-2025-12-10-x86_amd64 : boot and install without problem

Volumio-4.073-2025-12-05-x86_amd64
I can see
SYSLINUX 6.04…
Booting Volumio Audiophile Music Player…
then the screen was black ( sometimes pause with the above line )
I have to reset PC to restart but the same result.
Tried onboard HDMI the same result.

Is it PC hardware compatibility issue ?
Any suggestion ? I tried several USB dongle but the same result.

Thank you.

@gurusto, try this sequence for reliable Wi‑Fi setup:

  1. Update to the latest test build. (V4.080)
  2. Connect via Ethernet and complete the initial setup.
  3. While still on Ethernet, configure your Wi‑Fi network.
  4. Shut down the device.
  5. Disconnect the Ethernet cable.
  6. Power it back on — Wi‑Fi should come up normally.
