X86 Hardware issues (Graphics, WiFi, Onboard Sound, external DACs, Disks, BIOS/UEFI Boot problems etc.)

Ok, will try that now
Thanks :+1:

Hi @rob6736

Log analysis

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: DMI: Sony Corporation VPCL12M1E/VAIO, BIOS R1060T5 11/19/2009

So it is internally another model, but that’s ok.

It appears you device does have the same touchscreen controller as the VPC-L14S1E.

The VPC-L14S1E was released in 2010, your device a year earlier.

It is a “NextWindow Touchscreen”:

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=1926, idProduct=0065, bcdDevice= 0.01

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: usb 3-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: usb 3-2: Product: Touchscreen

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: usb 3-2: Manufacturer: NextWindow

Oct 17 17:15:07 volumio kernel: hid-generic 0003:1926:0065.0003: hiddev0,hidraw0: USB HID v1.11 Device [NextWindow Touchscreen] on usb-0000:00:1a.2-2/input1

The problem

Though detected, no driver was loaded.

Going back to the “linux-hardware.org” probe for the NextWindow, there is a note:

We have not found a driver for the device in any Linux kernel versions up to 6.12 according to the LKDDb.

This note is correct, there is no “in-tree” kernel driver to select to add to our customized kernel version 6.12.y

Alternative Drivers

However, there is the following out-of-tree driver for the device to make it work properly:

dmonad/nwfermi

better and newer instructions

glorang/nwfermi

Someone with the right skills could do this, but…

Out-of-tree drivers are not without risk and in principle unsupported.
They have to be compiled against the exact kernel version. So every time a new Volumio version is released with a newer kernel version, the driver has to be re-compiled.

Therefore, compiling out-of-tree drivers is not recommended.

Conclusion

The above mentioned driver is 12 years old, there is no guarantee the git contents are still valid.
On top of that is a more serious “caveat”.
Until now we did not cater for out-of-tree kernel driver additions in our build system for the Volumio x86 platform version.
This means further proceedings would:

  • include modification of the Volumio x86 platform build process.
  • include testing the driver, with the extra overhead of instructing you how to do so, as we do not have such hardware.
  • carry the risk that after a lot of work, it still does not work

Unfortunately this would be an effort we most likely cannot afford.
Therefore I can’t support it and will not recommend it to be added to the backlog.

Ok, well I appreciate your time, I assume then Linux driver won’t be found, the windows driver has a date of 2017, which I assume has come from Microsoft, but I understand that Linux probably won’t be supporting a driver for this computer being it’s too old.

I really do appreciate your help.
You put to be continued, so does that mean there maybe a driver some time in the future

Again
Thanks
Rob

see above, sorry

Ok, I appreciate your help.
Thank you
Rob

Prerequisites

Volumio Information

Volumio Version: 3.866
Hardware: ThinkCentre M75n
DAC: EF400

Debug Log

http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/B6SHvfc.html

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Update Volumio to 3.866.
  2. Reboot Volumio.
  3. Try to open Music library or to play Web radio.

Additional Information

After Volumio update to 3.866 my device can’t open Music library or play any Web radio station, live log is full of messages:

error: [ytcr] Error connecting MPD:
(Error) connect ECONNREFUSED /run/mpd/socket
Error: connect ECONNREFUSED /run/mpd/socket
at PipeConnectWrap.afterConnect [as oncomplete] (net.js:1159:16)
Retrying in 5 seconds…

Cantata from external PC with Windows is able to connect to mpd and take library data or play media.

Hey @Thriller,

You have Mpd http & Icecast output plugin installed, however it is not configured:

Oct 23 15:09 : exception: Failed to open "My Ice stream" (shout); problem opening connection to shout server ice.example.com:8015: Couldn't connect

This is your first mpd blocking point that you will need to resolve before anything else.

Kind Regards,

Hey @nerd,

  1. Plugin “Mpd http & Icecast output” was configured and successfully worked after all Volumio OS updates in 2024-2025.
  2. It doesn’t matter because after “Mpd http & Icecast output” was switched off and Volumio was rebooted nothing was changed with mpd: Volumio still can’t open Music library or play Web radio, live log is full of messages
    error: [ytcr] Error connecting MPD:
  • (Error) connect ECONNREFUSED /run/mpd/socket*
  • Error: connect ECONNREFUSED /run/mpd/socket*
  • at PipeConnectWrap.afterConnect [as oncomplete] (net.js:1159:16)*

  • Retrying in 5 seconds…*
    New log was sent.

I’ve just found out that 3.866 was removed from Volumio OS download page. It’s nice solution but what should do Volumio users who have already updated their streamers to 3.866?

I’m not sure what happened, but the 3.866 version is still here Volumio-3.866-2025-10-21-x86_amd64
Volumio OS page not updated (yet)?

3.866 has not being promoted as stable yet, that’s why it’s not available on the Volumio OS page

it is currently under internal QA test

V4.066, OTA update from 4.062

  • no audio on headphone jack (was OK on 4.062)
  • internal speakers are working

http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/FdBClox.html

I checked your log, the soundcard “HDA Intel” has been supported from the very first x86 versions and never led to discussions.
From the soundcard init messages I conclude that all is well: card recognized, Master mixer was enabled and set with 75% volume.
No idea what causes headphone to fail.

You are sure output “Analog” was selected in “Playback Options”?

Thank you for checking. Yes, Analog is selected.
fwiw, I’ve booted from a MX Linux Live iso and no problems with sound. Broken Hardware setup (cables e.g., broken jack) is ruled out.
Next I will boot Volumio 4.067 from iso and check sound.

@codevoid Could you give me the output from

Do the internal speakers switch off when you plug in your headphones?

@gkkpch Yes.

Jumped to 4.067 btw, and now even the internal speakers are silent (regardless of pluginstate)
