Volumio Rivo first impressions

Thank you.

Cheers.

Thim

Just to share my impressions of the Rivo as a replacement of the Primo after having the Primo 1 for more than a year and now using the Rivo for two weeks:

1 - The Rivo has a much better stereo image (width and depth) and a more relaxed presentation.
This alone is worth the upgrade.

2 - It connects more stable to my UPnP server Minim running on a Synology NAS
I had to force the Primo after each reboot to restart the UPnP client. Not needed anymore with the Rivo.

3 - The Rivo needs way less power than the Primo
My linear power supply stays much cooler than before.
The case of the Rivo stays pretty cool even after streaming several days continuously and even goes to sleep mode when not used at all.
This is another feature well worth the upgrade.

4 - The Rivo is able to deliver native DSD to my Audio Analogue AADac
At least for 64 and 128 Bit DSD.
The Primo is not able to do this. It always sends PCM.
Another big win for the Rivo.

I only need a streamer with no DAC features and the Rivo is absolutely fantastic.
I am happy that I moved from Primo to Rivo.

Having written to both Volumio (Davide) and Qobuz (Marina), I thought I will also open this question to the community while waiting for a reply from Volumio.
Recently, after almost three weeks of listening to Qobuz via the Volumio app in the Rivo, it has suddenly decided not to connect to Qobuz. After I press connect button, it takes me to the Qobuz sign-in page and after signing-me in, Qobuz would send me back to the Volumio app, which is what has been happening in the past. The Qobuz button on the app does not have the ā€˜log-offā€™ words which shows that it is not connected. If I reconnect immediately, it would send me to the Qobuz page with the word Back and send me back to the app without being connected. To address the issue form their end, Qobuz has reset my password and their server and also have checked my connection and did not find any issue. I have factory reset the Rivo a number of times, turn off/on my router, devices and the Rivo, but it is till not connecting. Anyone with similar experience and managed to resolve the connection issue?

Did you also tried to log out of My Volumio and back in again? That fixes most of these kind of problems in my experience

Yes I have, many times. Qobuz checked my IP address and reset their server and password for me when I asked them for assistance. I used my old Project Stream Box S2 Ultra to see whether the problem is caused by my network but it wasnā€™t as the Project connected to Qobuz straight away without any problem. The Project also uses the Volumio App.

Got an external display for the rivo (non-touch - hdmi only, 1920x1280). Aspect ratio is a bit wrong, everything is vertically stretched (for example, the circle around the play/pause button looks like an ellipse). Chances to get it fixed?

Besides, a kind of screen saver activates once in a while, the screen goes black even the music is playing, video out can be re-enabled with usb keyboard. Can i turn it this screen saver completely off?

I have the same issue on a 1920x1200 screen. The image is vertically stretched. I signalled this a while ago, but it seems the issue was never fixed.

There is the way to change hdmi resolution in config files (it has a khadas vim3l inside):
enable ssh in dev settings ({rivo ip}/dev)
ssh to the rivo (user/pwd: volumio/volumio)
cd /boot
nano env.user.txt
add the line: hdmimode=1920x1200p60hz
reboot

1920x1280 is not supported for my screen, but 1920x1200 looks better than 1080.

All the supported resolutions by vim:

To disable screensaver and display power management:

export DISPLAY=:0.0
sudo xset s off
sudo xset s noblank
sudo xset -dpms

Hello,
If you had to connect the RIVO to a high end DAC, which audio output would you use USB or AES/EBU? Thanks.

Based on a number of online reviews, the USB appears to be the recommended connection, that is if your DAC has implemented a good USB input. The second recommended connection is AES/EBU. I have run coax digital out to a very old Theta Cobalt 307 DAC and it sounds surprisingly good. The Cobalt does not have an AES or a USB connection. I prefer the sound from my SPL Diamond DAC via USB.

Hi all, I have a question to the community here.

If it works, Iā€™m still enjoying the Rivo, soundwise, but I have so many connection issues, for already a long time, that this thing is driving me completely crazy, to the point Iā€™m about to throw it in the garbage, since I donā€™t want to sell it and spoil somebodies enjoyment of music with such issues.

I use Spotify and Tidal, mainly Tidal. Actually both services have difficulty maintaining the connection with the Rivo. And donā€™t get me started when switching between music servicesā€¦ Itā€™s just plain and utter frustration.

Am I the only one having this or is this a common thing with the Volumio software?

FYI, I use a cabled connection, and tried different cables, no difference.

As Rivo owner youā€™re entitled to premium support.

My connection issue has now been resolved. It went to the repairers and they cannot find anything wrong with it and when it was returned, it connected with out a problem. Meanwhile thought Iā€™ll mention these factors which may have removed the connection issue:

  1. Modem updated by ISP to latest firmware
  2. Qobuz had some work done to their system
  3. I have introduced a new Mesh wifi system in my house and this has improved the overall wifi capability and capacity. So far no drop outs or interruptions. Previously albums would skip songs on Qobuz but not anymore.

I just ran some tests as a long time USB user (expensive USB cable from CAD) against a 120ā‚¬ AES XLR with Rivo to Analog Audio AADAC.
The XLR path has a real better imaging.
On the downside it cannot handle DSD data beyond 64 bit.
As the vast majority of my data is non-DSD I will keep AES as the default and switch to USB only for DSD. I keep both cables connected.
The AES cableā€™s improved performance is quite audible!

Tests with high end AES cables will be next in the mid future.

This is a very interesting observation as I was also thinking about trying out the AES/EBU connection but still keep the USB connection for DSD playback.

Iā€™m using AES/EBU into my Audiolab MDac+ because USB isnā€™t working (Nordost Blue Heaven USB).

Itā€™s also not working with my Audioquest Forest Green USB cable either, and both these cables arenā€™t working with my Topping E50 DAC as well.

Sounds great though, but itā€™s all pointing to a Rivo problem as itā€™s the common denominator.

My Raspberry Pi4 works beautifully via USB into either DAC with both cables.

If you have technical issues you should create a support ticket and not rely on the community forum.

Where did I imply that I was relying on the community forum?
Iā€™m just telling it how it is. Itā€™s a bit inconvenient not being able to connect via USB but the Rivo still sounds great with AES/EBU and operates terrifically - the most stable network streamer Iā€™ve owned (this includes Auralic) by far.

Iā€™ll get around to raising a support ticket at some point when I have the time.
