Problems, problems…again and again> every time when a global search (for a track or album) being engaged, both Rivo and the app (IoS) get stuck dead…only a soft (sometimes hard) restart helps. Seriously guys, when are you going to fix this mess with 4. 156 beta version? Are we to expect some solution before ‘‘ferragosto’’ or to wait September or later?
log (if there is anything to help you): http://logs.volumio.org/rivo/Conmgm4.html
Or just make available downgrading to 3.9?
Just as starter I am just a community member, trying to give support or help others.
Can you please provide steps your executing that makes the Rivo crash.
- I am running the Rivo with:

- Every function under Functionalities Control is on
- I have a NFS NAS mount with 68000 tracks
- Tidal enabled
- Qobuz enabled
What I found:
- If i run a search in “Music Library”, “Artist” or “Album” it doesn’t crash but I get simply no results
- When the green bar finally finish the mount to my NAS is still there, however MPD crashed. and all albums are gone. Only way to get them back is reboot. even
systemctl restart mpddoesn’t fix it.
- If I run a search in the default Music page, only results from Qobuz, Tidal and Spotify are returned
Is this the same behaviour that you are reporting??
Thanks for the help @Wheaten
@koksg This seems related to the issue you reported previously. Once again, MPD appears to be the culprit. One of our developers has identified a couple of possible fixes, but I don’t have an ETA yet since MPD is tricky to work with. As always, I’ll share any updates here in the thread as soon as I have them.
Hi koksg,
Thanks for the log. We’ve identified this as an MPD crash triggered during global search on large NAS-mounted libraries (watchdog timeout), not a generic bug but something we’re actively looking into with the dev team.
I don’t have a specific ETA to give you right now, I don’t want to promise a date I can’t confirm. As soon as there’s concrete progress, we’ll update this thread.
Thanks for your patience, and for helping us pinpoint the cause with your log.
Best
Marco
@Wheaten
I only see beta 4.156 in the test channel, which has stayed the same for a loooong time now. Where did you get 4.167 from?
Thanks
Hi @NikosR
This is not even a Beta release, so strongly advise you not to use it, unless the peeps from Volumio tell you to install it.
Thanks and cheers!
Hi @koksg
For the time being you can mount your NAS with CIFS.
This solves the crashing and missing search issue for me.
Interesting it is that when I switch to Roon app, these problems do not occur…unless for some time, maybe days?
But since I’ve found out that the very Roon Server ‘‘eats’’ the CPU (on my pretty robust Lenovo T series) insanely (70-90% !!!), seems the time has come to go with JPlay> no server needed, 3x cheaper than Roon and ‘‘said’’ to be even better sound wise, Roon to my taste is more ‘‘fatty’’, maybe because of some upsampling they apply ?.
Frankly, I do like the native sound signature of Volumio, but would like to see the integration, interface smoothness and metadata coverage like Roon or JPlay have…
do you know when realy comes the rollout of V.4 for the rivo+ ?
sincerely pb
As I suggested to you before, pls. read to the bottom of the first post of this thread, where all the most recent updates are posted. If you had done so you would have known that the obvious answer to your question is: No
Cheers
Rivo+ updated to version 4.185 quickly and without any issues.
Testing…
Just to note that 4.185 is the latest beta version, not on the stable update channel for Rivo and Rivo+ yet. It still carries the warning that interrupting the OTA update process may brick the device.
It’s working fine.
So far, there are no errors in my setup—internet radio, SoundCloud, LAN connection.
I’ll check Tidal and my music library later.
Sorry to disappoint you, but it only seems to work very well on the surface, the “Premium” features are a disaster, especially when using “Cast” to Sonos playback stops at the third song (using Ethernet cables too), as shown in the following log:
http://logs.volumio.org/primoplus/7yINdqX.html.
At this point I imagine that on other models the library still disappears if it exceeds 10,000 songs, but I haven’t tried it, just as I haven’t tried going back to Volumio 3 to experience the thrill of hearing even the fourth track of any album in other rooms.
When you try the software, you should do so slowly and not to please those who talk nonsense about the Italianness of Volumio and Arduino (the last not true), as if he were selling buffalo mozzarella.
Here on the plate we do not have a pizza costing a few euros but a product with a list price of €1,199 (see https://shop.volumio.com/product/primo-plus/) which cannot be used in its “Premium” functions precisely thanks to the famous technical Italianness and it’s not a problem introduced by the alpha or beta versions, rather it’s a problem with the official “stable” software that even subsequent updates haven’t been able to mitigate.
I remind you that on the “Primo Plus” I can’t set a software mixer, so I can’t change the volume with the Cast function. I’ll spare you the number of days spent uselessly waiting for a solution, I now use other things to listen to music in other rooms, luckily I only have a “Premium” product, even the Ikea speakers have no problem fetching the library from a NAS and playing it, they even work in my garage and basement and without interruptions.
I haven’t tested whether web radio freezes after many hours, but this could happen too, so more varied and longer test sessions are needed than short-distance ones.
Want “better,” try Eversolo
I’m happy with the sound quality. The options I use work.
You have premium support, use it.
We have it in our backlog now. We’re fully focused on rolling out the last 2 devices to V4 (Rivo and Rivo Plus). When done, we’ll trim this out. We are in freeze-mode at the moment, to proceed as safely and quickly as possible with QA.
Please note that the Volume setting will NOT be reflected on the SONOS device. This was never implemented, but I agree it would be a nice touch
Update on Volumio 4 for Rivo and Rivo Plus
We know many of you have been waiting for the Volumio 4 update on Rivo and Rivo Plus, and we know the delay and the lack of communication around it have been frustrating. So first of all: we hear you, and you’re right to ask for clearer updates.
Let me be direct and take responsibility for this. If it’s been slower than you hoped, it’s because I insisted we do it carefully and safely. The move from Volumio 3 to Volumio 4 on these devices isn’t a standard update. It’s a more delicate path, and during testing we saw failures that made me want to slow down and re-check everything. I don’t want to brick devices out in the field. It was my choice to make you wait rather than take the risk of you bricking your device. I’ll own that decision.
Now, the good news. We found a 100% safe update path from V3 to V4 for our products, and we’re rolling it out for Rivo and Rivo Plus. If you want to try it, just put your device in TEST MODE.
Here’s what happens now:
- We’ll run this beta test through the whole month of August.
- If we don’t get any bad feedback during this month, the update is validated and we’ll release it end of August / beginning of September.
- During this time, no new fixes will be made.
- After that, we’ll extend this update to all our other devices.
And there’s more good news:
- This completes the transition to V4. That means we can finally put all our effort into evolving the platform, fixing things and, most importantly, making it better than ever.
- We have some really good stuff coming for V4 in September: new features and plenty of refreshes.
- There’s also a new shiny thing on the way (not for everyone, but we’re excited to show it).
So in short: thanks for your patience. The decision to go slow was ultimately mine, but I made it for good reasons. And soon you’re going to love what’s coming.
This is the first time I will be trying to update my Rivo to a beta version (test channel). I will be connecting my Rivo to my UPS during the update because I’m in an unreliable location mains power wise and if all things go well I will report on my testing. If things end up badly I will rely on my Bluesound Node while waiting for you Italians to come back from your vacations. Being a neighbour in Greece I know very well what August means… It is fatally dangerous even to get sick in August…
