If I’m not mistaken, the N100 runs on a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4). There are multiple reports that certain CM4 and Raspberry Pi 4 batches have issues with date synchronization. I own two units, one works flawlessly, while the other consistently throws date misalignment errors.
So stating that Volumio is having issues pulling the date is not fully accurate.
The latter can be easy resolved by running a simple startup service, which does miracles.
And if you dislike google, you can also use: ExecStart=/bin/bash -c "sleep 30; /usr/bin/sudo /bin/date -s \"$(/usr/bin/curl -s --head head http://time.is | grep ^Date: | sed 's/Date: //g')\""
Tomasz_G, I had a spare high speed sd card and did a clean install of the firmware on that and I’m loving the N100 now. I noticed an improvement in SQ with ethernet versus wireless and Tharbamar did as well in his review of the N100.
I was able to access ssh on the N100 but it’s asking for a password to get in. I tried a few commonly used one and they didn’t work.
Wheaton, I know very little about Linux and Pi devices but on Headfi it was stated that instead of Raspberry Pi CM4 the N100 runs on NanoPi NEO3. Does this change the method to fix the date synchronization? Is there a way to apply a date fix when the ssh connection to the N100 is asking for a password?
Ok. In the meantime I’ve changed my router and finally was able to connect SMSL via ethernet and since then, it works without any issues. The password thing is the same issue that stopped me from connecting to the streamer and entering some magic commands all over the internet they say it should be “volumio” but it is not. Since Volumio support assured me about the fix coming in the future, I’m happy to wait for now and see if the date synchronization issue will be rectified.
The SMSL N100 ships with its own embedded Volumio build from SMSL, not the same v4.xxx images that we release for Raspberry Pi, x86, and OEM platforms. According to the manual it is configured through the Volumio App or via browser at http://friendlywrt .
To go further and confirm what is possible, I would need access to SMSL’s firmware repository to see what has been changed compared to the standard Volumio sources. In any case, adapting to v4.xxx would realistically need to come from SMSL themselves, since they control the platform. I do not have an N100 for testing, so I cannot say with certainty, and investigating this is outside of my current development budget.
If your friend needs YouTube or plugin support today, the practical way is to run Volumio v4.xxx on supported hardware (Pi, x86, or OEM partners) and then use the N100 purely as a DAC/streamer via USB, coax, or optical.
My friend decided to go ahead and ordered one anyway and it will ship to me for setting up. He’s ok without YouTube. I’m just curious how the SMSL N100 implements the Volumio.
That will be interesting to see in action. Since nothing detailed has been published, it would be very helpful to have a high-resolution PCB photo once you get the unit, as there is currently nothing available on the internet. Knowing the board layout and the processor used might shed light on how SMSL have implemented Volumio. Perhaps a separate thread like “Mystery box tear-down” would encourage owners to contribute.
Of course, this should only be done if it does not risk damaging the device or invalidating the warranty.
We need hard evidence of the SBC to see it, hearsay is not going to cut it. Please take a detailed photos of the board(s), processor, etc.

Hi Darmur, I am setting up a N100 for my friend and found out that it doesn’t have any plug-ins available at all. How do we get plug-ins enable for this N100 version. Current version is at 3.789 for N100 while the Pi version is at 3.832.
Hi Darmur, I just found this thread - unfortunately too late - earlier today I upgreded N100 to 3.831 just to find that plugins are also not available. BTW I was also checking Qobuz Connect - it is also not working (even if it is supported even before 3.831) - can you please check/confirm if Qobuz Connect also has to be in some way additionally enabled in Volumio central systems - N100 is showing/reporting “Premium Device” plan. Thank you in advance.
the problem with missing plugins will be fixed shortly, I’m on top of it
regarding Qobuz Connect, it’s a different story: every OEM manufacturer (in this case SMSL) has to follow a certain procedure with Qobuz, to obtain the green light for adding Qobuz Connect to their products. All Volumio OEM partners have been informed already, but only some of them initiated the procedure with Qobuz to obtain the authorization (for example MiniDsp e Orchard already took care of it, very quickly, and they are about to receive Qobuz Connect on their products).
I suggest to contact SMSL customer support, for pushing them to initiate the procedure, so they can obtain the authorization and green light from Qobuz for Qobuz Connect.
