Relay Module for GPIO Controlled Convenience Outlets

Here’s my first Volumio related project:

Please overlook the irregular surface finish–this was printed in PETG at highest speed which may not make the best looking objects but seems to make the strongest for the material using an open frame machine.

It will power down my player piano audio accompaniment system in stages depending upon how long the audio signal has ended.

In addition to a standard Raspberry Pi GPIO Relay Module you need:

  1. Thermal overload protector of rating suited to power cord (I used 10A and 18 gauge 1-meter cord with 10 mm round mounting stud.

  2. Standard snap-in strain relief

  3. 3 x Household snap-in, panel mount convenience outlets for standard square opening.

  4. 8 x M2.5 x 3.5 x 4mm heat set threaded inserts.

  5. 4 x M2.5 x 20 x 6mm circuit board spacers

  6. 4 x M2.5 x 5 mm bolt

  7. 4 x M2.5 x 7mm bolt

  8. ferrules & crimp-on end connectors as suited to size/arrangement

  9. 40-conductor GPIO ribbon cable (short as possible) and 2 x 40-pin GPIO connectors OR pre-made 40-pin GPIO extension cable.


For all good reasons please do not omit the thermal overload and ensure that it is rated properly for both the power cable and internal wiring.

The GPIO cable passes through a narrow slot so you either have to make a custom extension or remove/replace one of the connectors on a pre-made extension. If using a pre-made extension be certain to cut the end off the cable so the connector takes a new “bite” when you replace! If you don’t want to do extension cable surgery then enlarge to slot to allow the connector to pass through.

I simply printed the numbers separately (in PLA) and permanently adhered them to the PETG using Caseway Vinyl Adhesive SC-200. The adhesive is solvent based and highly volatile–use with caution.

The ferrules are exceptionally nice (and best wiring practice) in an application such as this. The crimp end connectors (translucent “wire nuts”) are also very good to use. Think long-term safety as this is the sort of device that gets mounted and forgotten.
