That happened only once that the knob took over from the hinge

This happened to me and it turned out that Volumio was installed and simply waiting for me to go through the initial configuration process via connecting to its hotspot with a web browser.

Beside reduced power usage, which is welcomed, it also changes low level kernel functions including I2C (various HATs) , vc4 (HDMI audio), HW identifier; just to mention few.

The new BCM2712D0 starts from this kernel 6.6 commit:
There are no upstream backport plans to the kernel lower than 6.6. This is quite disappointing as the kernel 6.1.69+ is currently at the hart of the Volumio OS.
Devs are already discussing the kernel bump to 6.6; which is not a trivial endeavour. Beside internal audio tweaks, such change causes a domino effect across plugins relying on GPIOs like:
- Amplifier Switch
- Audiophonics Evo Sabre
- Audiophonics ON/OFF
- GPIO Buttons
- GPIO Control
- IR Activity LED
- IR Remote Controller
- MPD_OLED
- Pirate Audio
- RemotePi
- Rotary Encoder II
The list is incomplete yet and very likely more to come.

Volumio has started and can be installed. 
But there is no wifi, it cannot be switched on.
Sound card can be set, but it doesn’t sound, throws an error.

Booting is one thing and it works. To make the BCM2712 D0 i2C work with Volumio OS is going to be a bit of waiting; once kernel 6.6 is prepared and plugins ported.
