Often connection problems

Hi there,

first of all: my English isn’t very good, I’m sorry for that.

I’m using Volumio since over 3 years with spotify. In this time I had often problems with playing music. Sometimes the spotify app can’t connect to the the volumio, but can’t start to play. The play-button shows the right symbol, but the time isn’t runing. Sometimes it helps to change the song, but the most time not.
Often the spotify app can’t connect to the volumio, the volumio app can do. But if I want to start music from the volumio app, it doesn’t work.
A few weeks ago it was over days reproducible: If I came home (after spotify played musiv over bluetooth on the car) I could connect and play. After sopping in the night and restart in the morning it doesn’t work.

Most times of the problem, about 99 %, I have to reboot the volumio and after that it’s work. Really only sometimes where 1 to 2 weeks no problems and it works fine.
I don’t know if the problem is on side of spotify or volumio.
The volumio is doing auto update, so it was over many versions.
Where can I find the logs, respectively which do I need, for finding the problem?

Thank you very much

Hey @Fipsi,

Steps to Understand Your Volumio and Spotify Issue:

1. Check Internet Connection:

  • Make sure your Volumio device is connected to a stable internet.

2. Restart Devices:

  • Turn off your Volumio device, wait for 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router to refresh the connection.

3. Update Volumio and Spotify Plugin:

  • Open Volumio settings.
  • Check for system updates and install them.
  • Make sure the Spotify plugin is updated.

4. Reinstall Spotify Plugin:

  • Go to Volumio’s settings and find “Plugins.”
  • Uninstall the Spotify plugin.
  • Restart your Volumio device.
  • Reinstall the Spotify plugin.

5. Check Your Spotify Account:

  • Ensure your Spotify account is active and not in use on too many devices.

6. Create and Share Debug Logs:

  • If the issue happens again, create a debug log.
  • Follow this guide to learn how to create logs: How to Get Debug Logs on Volumio.
  • After creating the log, copy the link Volumio gives you and post it here.

This will help us see what’s going wrong and fix it faster. Let us know if you need any help with these steps!

Kind Regards,

Hi nerd,
thank you.

  1. Internet is okay.
  2. As reported a restart often fix the problem. But I don’t want anymore to restart it sometimes several times a day
  3. everything is up to date
  4. I tried several times to reinstall plugin and volumio, problem still exist
  5. account is active, it’s possible to play an the smartphone and by changing to play on volumio there often the problems until restart the volumio
  6. I don’t know if the current logs helps, because the connections today worked, but they’re here: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/yIbgmqS.html . I’ll post a new link/log, when to problem comes next time.

Thank you

Here we go again:
The logs with connection failure before reboot: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/nBe8Uza.html
Today here’s more to get: Log after reboot, successfull connecting, starting music, but no sound output (player time is running): http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/naRLEtW.html
And the log after change song with starting music (without reboot between log 2 und 3): http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/XaUwjkH.html

First part it is power budget issue. Can you tell me a bit more about your build please? What is connected to what and how?

Second part, on the surface, has characteristics of time drift.

@Wheaten - can you kindly use your magic to beat the Raspberry to the time foot-lock?

Kind Regards,

Hi @nerd,
thank you for your analysis.

I’ve an 5 V/12 A power supply and about 30 cm wires to the volumio. Also an second Raspberry Pi and an Arduino Board is connected to the same power supply. If I measure the voltage during operation with all 3 devices I get 5,14 V.

Are the time drifts from the volumio or the spotify app? The IP address in the second row is from volumio.

Thank you for your help

Fipsi

To set the time correct follow these instructions:

Where do you see the time is incorrect? If I read the live log the time in this row is corrent:

info: Launching a new LiveLog session
time=“2025-01-07T08:35:23+01:00” level=debug msg=“fetched chunk 14/17, size: 524288” uri=“spotify:track:4q0OK0HRaLd2Wzz23GeApJ”

This one.

Okay, I’ll set the time-service.
Now is waiting, if the problem comes again?
I’ve checked the wiring a second time: wtf? From power supply to distributor is losing over 300 mV :scream: I think I’ve to change something…
Now there is 5,23 V on the distributor and 5,54 V on the power supply. I’ll see, if this helps. And change the wiring next time… :man_facepalming:
Thank you for your help

I am referring to the down circuitry connections. Is your Pi powered by USB or directly to 40pin header? What else and how is connected to the Pi?

Kind Regards,

The power supply is an MeanWell enclosed. From this are 2,5 mm² wired to terminal clamps. From the clamps is a open End<->USB cable to the Pi. Otherwise is only an ethernet cable, an HiFiBerry DAC+ pro XLR Board and the XLR sound cables connected to this Pi.

Good morning,
the next failure behavior about 20 minutes ago:
it connects immediately and disconnect after pressing play. It’s not possible to connect again, it needs an reboot first. http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/XvIMewS.html

As @nerd already mentioned, you have power issues. With low voltages the behaviour of the rPi becomes unstable. Please test again with an official rPi PSU.

Oh hell…
Now I’d changed to power supply to an original Raspberry device… I’ll report the next days.
Thank you both for your time and help

So… the problem has returned without undervoltage: https://logs.volumio.org/volumio/h3JpvKN.html
But I can’t see something in the log? I think it’s just to connection from my PC to the dev-board?
After reboot and switch song to the next it’s works fine again: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/DlW5DXa.html
