🚀 New Volumio Mobile App – Beta Release

Hey everyone,

Today we’re thrilled to share something we’ve been quietly working on for quite some time: the new Volumio Mobile App.

This is more than just a new app: it’s the first milestone in a larger project that will redefine how Volumio feels, connects, and performs across the entire ecosystem. Our goal remains clear: make Volumio the best ecosystem for music playback, for everyone from the DIY Raspberry Pi lovers to owners of Volumio products, and our OEM partners who power their devices with Volumio OS.

WHY A NEW APP

We started from what we know is the most critical moment in every Volumio journey: the first experience.
That first setup and connection moment is where the magic starts, but also where friction can happen.

The new Volumio app has been completely rethought to make onboarding as smooth, intuitive, and error-free as possible. And we’re not stopping there: upcoming updates will make the first connection via Bluetooth, making wireless setups easier than ever.

WHAT’S NEW

This new version includes tons of improvements:

  • :sparkles: A smoother onboarding flow for first-time users.
  • :arrows_counterclockwise: Easy device switching right from the top of the app.
  • :stethoscope: Better self-diagnostics tools for quicker troubleshooting.
  • :loud_sound: A foundation ready for even more ecosystem features coming in the next months.

WHY IT MATTERS

We see this app as a key step toward a unified and effortless Volumio experience, one that bridges our hardware products, DIY users, and partner devices. It’s been months of passionate work from Leo, Gianluca, Davide, Nicola, and the whole Volumio team, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far it’s come.

But before we release it publicly, we want to hear from you, our community.
We know there will be edge cases, and we rely on your feedback to help us polish it to perfection.

JOIN THE BETA

If you want to help shape the future of Volumio, join the Volumio App Beta Program:

The app is currently in review and will be live approximately on Oct 10th.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Here’s how you can make the most impact:

  • :jigsaw: If you find issues, post them here and include your mobile OS and version, what you were trying to do, and what happened instead.
  • :brain: If possible, share logs from your Volumio device.
  • :speech_balloon: And please share any feedback, big or small, about what you’d improve or what doesn’t feel right.

This is just the beginning of what’s coming for Volumio. We’ve got a lot more in store over the next months: features that will make your listening experience even smoother, smarter, and more connected.

So, go ahead, test it, break it, and tell us what you think.

We can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Testing on Android 16. No issues. Performance is snappy. Look and features appear the same as the web browser, except the welcome/system option page. Volume controls work properly: via the phone’s buttons and the app.

Things I’d like to see in the future:

  • Tidal/Spotify like feature to select favorite artists and get updates in the app when they release new music, etc
  • also artist/album/track suggestions based on my favorite artists
  • lyrics of the song playing, where available
  • seamless listening on mobile networks (I know you can via My Volumio, but yes, more seamless!). Ability to lower quality when on mobile networks.
  • option to download tracks for offline or non wifi listening
  • maybe a mobile friendlier page for using super search to explore new music, including suggestions for similar artists
  • options to customize the look and feel, especially font and art sizes.

Edit: I like that the app is visible in my phone’s lock screen when music’s playing.

Edit2: and Play Here continues to work when the phone’s locked. Small thing, but already makes me more likely to use the app over the browser.

Testing on IOS 18 (iPhone 11 Max).

APP isn’t able to discover my Volumio on a Rapsberry Pi 5. From WEB browser on iPhone I can connect to volumio withou any issue.

There seems to be an issue with local network discovery which we are investigating on iOS.

It might have something to do with how permissions are handled in TestFlight. We are investigating thanks for the report!

Will there be an automatic 90 degree rotation option in the Volumio app on phone?

So that after rotating 90 degrees it would look like this:

I am using a fully up to date iPhone 14

Here is the bug I found.

It involves the device display at the top of the Play page where Volumio offers a drop down of devices. If you are in Play mode the app now allows you to click the top to get a drop down of available devices, and you can toggle between devices. When you do, Volumio switches to the new device, and then the screen will show you the device you are currently in. Very nice.

However, if you change devices using the old menu, (bottom right) and select “switch device” there becomes a problem. Volumio switches to the new play screen, as expected, however, the device display at the top is till the old device. So now what is displayed is not in sync with what is playing.

Edit2: and Play Here continues to work when the phone’s locked. Small thing, but already makes me more likely to use the app over the browser.

For me, this would be a HUGE thing that I have been waiting for a long time  . I hope the “Play Here” service is finally more stable as well, because on smartphones I have always found it very sensitive to interruptions, sudden track changes and other issues at the slightest operation: phone locked, opening other apps, etc. (and I have a Google Pixel 9 Pro, so it cannot be a resource problem).

Hi everyone, we are releasing version 2.3.1 (will be available after review from the stores). It should fix some issues with discovery of devices on the local network.

There is a known issue on iOS that affects some people, preventing them from discovering devices. We are investigating the issue, if you are affected, but figure out how to get it working, please reach out.

Thank you for participating in the beta!

Hey @tweed77,

Thank you for your question. I’m not involved in the development of the new Volumio mobile app (at least not yet). Credit for the app’s creation goes to the Volumio team - specifically Leo, Gianluca, Davide, Nicola, and the rest of the crew - who have worked passionately for months to bring it to life and make it a key step toward a unified and effortless Volumio experience.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for reporting. We are on it

2.3.1 does not appear to have solved the loss of connection for iOS devices. I am using iPhone and Rivo not connecting. Although other devices do.

Running iOS version:
iPhone 15,
iOs 18.6,
App V2.3.1.

Here are my first findings.

  • Device detection performs better then stable version. No need to swipe down to get missing devices.
  • Would like to see screen rotation, to make better use of the screen
  • Switch devices goes smooth, also switching back to first connected device
  • Selected Motivo, Play here is unresponsive
  • Non unicode charactes are not proper decoded,
  • Navigation is not intuitive. screens shows < or x or both
  • If i switch devices, from Motivo to Rivo, the top bar still shows Motivo which is very confusing.
  • When switched to Rivo and browse, no clue if it is the Rivo or Motivo
  • And it gets even worse. I switch to the Primo, which shows the correct played radio station.
However on top it says Motivo
The bottom is the playing track on the Primo
The list inbetween is the is still the Rivo…

And the android app unable to test, joined Beta, but after 5 days still nothing.

Hi all, also unable to find my devices using v2.3.1.

Running on iPhone 15, iOS 26.1 Beta 3 trying to find two Volumios running on Rpi4s over Ethernet.

I have noticed that when pressing “Device not found?”, Local Network doesn’t appear to be enabled. Pressing to enable it doesn’t stay enable and returning to previous screen shows an error:

We have release version 2.3.2 on TestFlight a couple of hours ago. The discovery issues on iOS should be fixed with that one.

@Wheaten Could you post a screenshot of the unicode characters not being decoded?

If you are not getting updates remember to join the closed beta with the links in the first post. We are having problems with the Android beta, we’ll keep you posted when it’s solved. Now available.
