New 2023 Spotify Plugin

After uninstalling and re-installing it, I can see now the lossless option, thanks for the hint!

I agree. I subscribed. Qobuz was my preferred stream service anyway. Well, I do enjoy Youtube Music. It would be nice to get video capability from Volumio, but there’s lots of ways to solve that.

@volumio, was there actually any relevant feedback to your requests to become an official Spotify implementer, or is it just a black hole?
Is there anything else you can do to get Spotify to take notice of you company?
You could start a petition. If you do, I’m sure everyone will join in!

Financial support for Volumio is not even a question for me. That’s only fair.
Kind regards

I’m a relative Volumio newbie, and I’m probably missing something, but:

Isn’t the current Spotify Connect integration in Volumio sufficient for users to experience Spotify Lossless? Using the Spotify app on my phone to initiate the Spotify Lossless connection to Volumio, I can then control playback through the Spotify app. Sure it’s not a “native” solution, but it works really well.

Maybe this helps: Volumio - The Spotify Community
Please support my idea there to make visible there is a need.

I can`t see Lossless with Spotify Connect. Spotify reports me: This device currently supports streaming quality up to “very high”.

Can you really play Lossless with Spotify-Connect or do you mean classic bluetooth-streaming from your phone to your playback-device?

Hello Community,
I have just got a beautiful Rivo+ transport! Really happy with it but was wondering, if the current (4.3) Spotify plugin supports lossless streaming? It doesn’t look like it or have I missed something? Thanks

… just re-activated my dormant premium subscription. With the Spotify plugin (device: Rivo+ as well) the “rivoplus/dev” infopage shows “ogg” as codec.

So I guess the Spotify plugin does not currently support lossless.

I was referring to the lossless setting on the Linux app installed with .deb package, nothing to do with Spotify Connect or Volumio

Link to a Spotify post where you can “like” the idea to make the tools available to the Volumio devs to make an “official” plugin… the more likes the better

«On a more personal note, I find it a bit disappointing to see some people say they’d rather spend 350 euros on another device than support Volumio through a small subscription.»

70€/year is not a small subscription for me. I love Volumio, and i would be delighted to go to premium, but for a lifetime subscription.
Another device becomes a good choice when it’s less expensive in three or four years.

Thanks for the work !

Hello @volumio team,

Please consider offering a lifetime subscription option to long‑standing users. While free users aren’t technically customers, your registration records can identify loyal, long‑term accounts that would likely value a one‑time lifetime license. Targeting this group with a periodic, limited lifetime offer could reward loyalty and generate additional immediate revenue.

Thank you for considering this idea.

This is a very good idea. We’ll discuss this internally and let you guys know.

Occasionally, there are promotions for purchasing a lifetime Volumio license.
I paid around €249 for mine in January 2025.

Agree! I’ve been using mainly Volumio with a Raspberry Pi and a DAC since before the Industry considered a streamer, I2S and other stuff you find in Volumio, as exotic.

Now everyone is scrambling to push out streamers and functionality found in V for many times the price, with fancy displays and a ton of marketing, etc.

The idea to show the group of early adopters / enthusiasts / beta testers ( a little love would surly be appreciated. I’m not a fan of subscription plans, rather I would gladly pay a reasonable amount for each major release.

Greetings and peace

@snuka

This is purely my personal opinion and not affiliated with Volumio in any way.

Are you referring to how xxxx operates, releasing just one or two major updates per year, offering a modest renewal discount, yet making minimal changes to the actual software?
Whenever something new is introduced, you’re required to upgrade your license to get it.
Now, by contrast, you pay the same amount and every new release/function is included.

249 euro is not a big expense for a lifetime license

In fact, the creators of Volumio could offer such promotions more often – once or twice a year – for those who are definitely interested.

Hi to everyone,

my opinion expressed here is based on 5 years of using Volumio on a Rasberry Pi. I haven’t experienced Volumio on any other hardware.
The relevant components of my audio system for valuating the sound quality were
• PS Audio Digital Link III
• Myryad MI120 integrated amp
• Bowers and Wilkins 705s standmounts

Being an audiophile with some technical knowledge for some 50 years, I totally agree with Jeanne that “70€/year is not a small subscription”.

No offence, but regarding Volumio’s user-friendliness or rather lack of same, I would probably hesitate to pay that amount as a life time fee.
Time moves on and while loyalty is a precious thing I as a customer have to compare to other products and services and what they have to offer at what price.-

I have used Volumio for many years on a Rasberry Pi 4b mounted into a 7" touchscreen for mainly Internet radio and as a Spotify endpoint. I also tried Moode, Picoreplayer etc.
It took me a while to get a remote control for the most basic commands (play, stop, skip forward, volume) working, as I hate to pick up my mobile and use an app, but instead want to concentrate on the music I’m listening to, not the gear that makes that possible.
Anyway, my second streamer at the time was a Majority Fitzwilliam (for €109 incl. a remote control and a small display) feeding into a PS Audio Digital Link III via its digital output resulting in a more than acceptable sound.
It’s based on a Frontier Silicon, Venice 6 module chip (FS2026) and supports UNDOK.
Both solutions were low-budget approaches and while the Majority worked flawlessly, the Volumio/Rasberry Pi combination was what I called my ‘permanent construction site’ and was kept going only in anticipation of lossless audio, as the Majority Fitzwilliam is limited to 320kbps when streaming, although FLAC is supported for file streaming.
I also had various streamers like Pioneer, Denon, Cambridge Audio, but none stayed long.
Prior to the arrival of Spotify lossless I used the Volumio/Rasberry for radio stations like ‘Paradise Radio’ or ‘Naim Jazz’ and its lossless programs, which worked and delivered a good sound.

When after years of waiting, Spotify lossless arrived and it subsequently became obvious that it was not supported by Volumio I decided to move on.
Needless to say that I have meanwhile decided on a Wiim Ultra.
A clever little gadget that is a pleasure to operate and (integrated into my system) sounds sublime.
A lot of thought and ressources have obviously gone into the development of the software and the app which is comprehensive, flexible and covers all aspects of system integration.
They have even included TuneIn and VTuner, which are paid for. However I prefer to enter radio streaming URLs manually, which is also catered for under ‘Open network stream’ to have control over the quality of the bitstream.
Small details like including a bluetooth remote control rather than an IR one is just another example of how this product exceeds expectations at this price point.
I will never look back.

Thanks & Bonne chance, Gentlemen!

Cheers

Michael

Great initiative! But so far it has only collected 58 votes… It would be great if lots of people backed this and Spotify listened.

I hope Volumio and Spotify find a solution! I really enjoy Volumio and would like to keep both the streamer and Spotify.
