I did this a few weeks ago. Sounds so much better.
If indeed it is the case that we won’t be able to get Spotify Flac on Volumio because Spotify (massive grumble) what are the chances that Volumio would accommodate spotify’s attitude with changes to their own pricing structure? something that just enabled Tidal support ? I don’t need everything else that comes in the monthly sub - i was a subscriber for a while - but i reaeaeaeaeallly want high def audio through my DIY streamer - can i pay you guys just a one off lump for Tidal support, or would you consider offering a much cheaper sub that just enabled Tidal/Quobuz ?
Good evening,
was just wondering if the same will consequently apply to the likes of Moode, PicorePlayer etc.
I’m sure I must have a fully configured Moode on SD card lying around somewhere. ![]()
Btw, my Rasberry Pi feeds via USB into a PS Audio Digital Link III => Myryad MI120 => Bowers and Wilkins 705s.
Cheers
Michael
Same boat here. Just want to stream quality to my DAC. I was excited to see maybe Spotify could be the answer. I do the mConnect/Bubble upnp solution, but really wanted better support. I don’t mind paying for a music service, but paying to access my paid music service rubs me the wrong way. It’s not much to pay volumio each month. But all I want is access.
Hey everyone,
Spotify is a free plugin, so it’s a bit odd when people get start throwing in paying for Qobuz or Tidal integration, which are premium features.
That’s like walking into a Mercedes dealership to complain about my Tesla’s electricity bill, sure, they’re both cars, but that’s not how it works.
Testing Qobuz and Volumio premium at the moment.
Raspberry pi 5 Volumio 4.029 Premium hangs when playing Qobuz Connect favourite tracks, Plugins active Fusion DSP, System Information, Spotify Connect, Now Playing, Peppy meter basic, Touch Display. Unresponsive power reset needed. Upgrade to 4.062 and continue evaluation. Sound stuttering when playing via Qobuz connect. System information shows no high CPU load. CPU load 40% temperature 85 degrees Celsius. Testing Spotify plugin instead, aside of the lower sound quality works like a charm.
Premium Qobuz not working properly with all plugins enabled. Spotify works stable.
Could be that the Raspberry pi hardware needs active cooling or running too many plugins at the same time is too much. Seems more stable disabling Fusion DSP. So there are apparently trade offs to the hardware requirements, where at first it was sufficient but Qobuz puts a higher strain on the device.
Appreciate the HQ sound, tracks sound better, unfortunately Spotify DRM restricts a quick open source implementation.
Would it be a consideration for @volumio /Volumio to acquire licensing or getting certified for Volumio hardware/ software products on Spotify including Spotify Connect to support Lossless as a premium implementation?
https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/commercial-hardware/launch
https://certomato.spotify.com/
So there is a choice for future lossless on the opensource plugin when/ if it becomes ever available and a direct route for your paying premium product owners/ subscribers?
Hopefully the Spotify plugin gets enhanced and implemented.
One additional thought is to utilize/ integrate the Spotify web client running on Volumio perhaps that is viable alternative route to enable lossless playback?
Well…sort of. To stretch your analogy:
Through no fault of the dealer, the Tesla I have from him no longer works properly, however that same dealer ALSO sells Mercedes… but I don’t want a really big one, I just want to to go backwards and forwards to the supermarket, and whereas before i was happy with my free tesla, im willing to pay for the ability to go and get my shopping; Whilst the Tesla I had, I liked very much, and was indeed free, I’m willing to pay for a middle ground between the free and the ‘more than i need’ and I’m wondering if the dealer is willing to make me, and others like me, a deal!
I must admit I don’t see why it’s ‘odd’, and I’m not complaining (…well at anyone ither than Spotify…
).
Dont get me wrong - but actually I am in a dilema:
I did not subscribe TIDAL because I cannot use it on VOLUMIO without the Superstar subscription (an additonal cost for using TIDAL plugin with Volumio) ![]()
I waited for Spotify to become lossless - and now I cannot use it on VOLUMIO either (such on other system not, too)
Well - I fear loosing VOLUMIO - for the favor of a WIIM streamer or just by using my ROON Server (CORE) with TIDAL …
I think it´s a quite “confusing” and sad development.
Will buy now some CDs on Discogs and will rethink my streaming habbits ![]()
Wiim ultra with a display for €350 seems a reasonable alternative, checking if its Spotify certified for lossless support… It does Spotify & Qobuz HQ is supported. I guess Qobuz quality is nice too. Need to review how Spotify lossless roll out develops. Doing the math on the annual subscription to enable Qobuz. Consider to buy a WiiM Ultra as an extra streamer with Qobuz and Volumio premium to wait out the developments. Will Volumio confirm going the Spotify and Spotify Connect certified route. Spotify - Connect
yes; precisely and all of this… ![]()
you all know it depends on Spotify, not on Volumio
It appears to be Spotify corporate strategy to roll out lossless on Spotify Connect certified devices only. As expected DRM encryption keys won’t become available for open source or Spotify Free versions. It’s upsell strategy. Volumio should consider it’s own options and strategy how large of a market segment they could gain or lose and if compliance to the Spotify regulations is possible for current or future products.
“Spotify lossless (Spotify HiFi / Music Pro) capability
Spotify launched/rolled out lossless (FLAC up to 24‑bit/44.1kHz) in 2025; Spotify’s docs and public coverage state lossless can be delivered via Spotify Connect to supported endpoints, but the endpoint must implement the required authenticated playback path/codecs and meet Spotify’s SDK/partner requirements.
Official Spotify developer guidance implies certified/official client stacks or approved SDKs are needed for guaranteed lossless delivery to a device.”
So, to recap, will it be possible to enjoy Spotify lossless on Volumio any time soon?
Hey everyone,
I just wanted to jump in and clarify a few points, since many of you have asked about Spotify integration and lossless support.
As Volumio, we’ve applied several times over the past six years to become official implementors of Spotify’s SDK. Unfortunately, despite our repeated attempts, Spotify has never replied or granted us access to their official SDK. That’s the only reason we rely on open-source implementations for Spotify playback today.
To be clear, we would love to integrate the official Spotify SDK, just as we do with TIDAL, Qobuz, and other partners. Over the years, we’ve demonstrated that we can fully respect content protection and still deliver great experiences to users. Sadly, Spotify has simply never allowed us to participate.
Regarding lossless playback, if there ever becomes a legitimate, open-source way to support it, you can be sure Volumio will adopt it. But as long as Spotify’s official lossless option requires proprietary SDK access and DRM protection, we can’t and won’t compromise Spotify’s intellectual property.
On a more personal note, I find it a bit disappointing to see some people say they’d rather spend 350 euros on another device than support Volumio through a small subscription. Many of you have enjoyed Volumio for free for years, and we’re proud of that. But instead of giving your money to a company that has never given anything back to you, consider that by subscribing to Volumio, you’re supporting a free ecosystem that has been built and improved for you all along.
If you’ve enjoyed Volumio, one of the best ways to say thank you and help it thrive is by supporting the project through a subscription. It’s not just about access to streaming integrations, you also get multiroom, better metadata, advanced features, and continuous development that keeps the whole ecosystem alive.
We’ll keep applying for Spotify SDK access and pushing to make Volumio better every day. Thanks to all of you who believe in what we’re building and help keep it going. ![]()
I went through the whole thing at https://developer.spotify.com/
It is rather cumbersome as you need to be a certified partner, integrate and send them two copies of the product lol
Fellows, let’s not complain let’s see this as a new challenge going forward
Linux desktop Spotify snap software had remote lossless enabled without any need of an user software package update this week.
Ain’t snap packages not designed to receive updates seamlessly in the background, without any user interference??
Same software version, no package update installed, the snap package was not updated, indicating Spotify enabled server side lossless on the Linux Spotify release.
I don’t have it enabled on my Spotify Desktop app installed on my Lubuntu PC (.deb, not from snap)
I have it on Windows and Android, same account
Users report amongst others reinstalling the package resolved this, see Linux Desktop Client Missing Lossless Audio Suppor... - Page 7 - The Spotify Community
