Intel Apollo Lake / Braswell chipset for Volumio x86

This is what I got yesterday:

Version 2.256 (local graphics interface not shown, only six virtual consoles, from tty1 up to tty6)
logs.volumio.org/volumio/Olov5xf.html

Version 2.262 (local graphics interface not shown, only six virtual consoles, from tty1 up to tty6)
logs.volumio.org/volumio/9iAz4DN.html

Tonight I will get a log with the version 2.201, where the local graphics interface is shown and works.

I burned a USB stick with v 2.201: the local interface on VGA/HDMI is working.
In this moment Volumio doesn’t want to send the report: it keeps reading “Sending log report, please wait”.

Volumio X86 v 2.201. Intel NUC-Kit NUC6CAYH. (Celeron Processor J3455). Graphics interface on HDMI and VGA outputs is working.

Anyhow, here is a handmade log:

@Roberto
I was going to post this yesterday, sorry.
From various tests done over the last weeks and input from a number of your own tests, the issues seem be fairly clear now.

Volumio support on x86 is more or less determined by 2 things:

  • the volumio distro and kernel, currently based on Debian jessie with Kernel version 3.18.25
  • Debian firmware support for various hardware devices using the supported packages in jessie

Tests have shown, that there is no practical way to support the newest hardware at the moment.
The current volumio versions can only includes firmware based on what is available from jessie.
So obviously firmware support for a lot of new devices are missing.
Adding support for newer hardware by using firmware from stretch won’t work because these packages have been built for a different kernel driver version.
Additionally, backporting drivers for new hardware, to be found in kernel 4.9.y, won’t work for similar reasons.

Though switching to kernel 4.9.y does help with drivers, it does not solve our missing firmware problem.
Support for a build with kernel 4.9.y and firmware packages fetched from stretch is something we currently cannot afford.

There is only one real solution, Volumio needs to switch from jessie to stretch (with upgrading to the 4.9.y kernel).
We are committed to do it, but have not scheduled it.
Apart from doing a few preliminary builds (to estimate the work involved) there is no plan and no target date.

So currently there is not much else we can do, sorry about that.

– GĂ© –

Very bad news. :astonished: :frowning:
So I have to use another music distribution, or develop my own system (I already did it for the Udoo Quad), if I want to use the WiFi board and/or the toslink output of my NUC.

Bad news? Yes, but not caused by us.
Please blame Intel or Debian, not us, for not making all the drivers and firmware available for an older kernel version (though it is an LTS).
Don’t get sour, just because we do not have a solution right now :unamused:

In fact, the good news is that we are committed to switch to a new Debian distribution only released less than 2 months ago (July 22nd 2017).
This is all free community work, our purpose is to support as much x86 hardware as possible, but we do not have unlimited resources.
Everything to be delivered to you on a plate, whatever you want, whenever you want and for free is not what we can offer.
In case you expect miracles, well yes, this may not be the right place for you

There has been a misunderstanding. I wrote ‘bad news’ because I prefer Volumio than other systems, and I would have preferred to use it in its full possibilities. I keep checking it and I will use it when it will switch to the new Debian version. I already use if for the Raspberry Pi.

You are doing a great job.

PS: I have made a music player as a hobby, and I know how it is difficult following the new versions. My system (for the Udoo) works very well and sounds good, but lacks a good interface to be used through a standard browser: it relies on the various mpd clients available around the web.
My system too uses a sophisticated scheme of read-only, ram disk and overlay partition non to hang when the user abruptly turns the power off, so I know how hard work you had to do.

sorry for not helping out more with tests, but i am currently trying to settle in a new job (good) in a new country where finding accommodation is insanely impossible (bad). All my gear is packed in boxes and it seems it will stay like this for some time :frowning:

after catching up with all these posts there are some mixed feelings

On the one hand volumio is for the moment not working with apollo lake
BUT
we now know what is causing the issue for this (and possibly other future hardware)

I would however be very interested to unleash the full potential on relatively new hardware and some properly fast storage (ssd) that would result in more snappy large database browsing. Will be following the developments here for sure

big thanks @gkkpch!

hi all,
am I correct to assume that the new version 2.310 for x86 using kernel 4.9.51 should now work with apollo lake?

Anyone tested already?

—edit—
was too quick! apparently 2.310 is only for rpi at the moment. But i think its getting closer ! maybe the next x86 release will have the updated kernel

We have done some good field testing with 4.9 but it is not mature enough to be released with Debian jessie ans an OS.
If there is enough interest for a dev version, I would support the idea, but without ANY promise we will ever release it while we have Debian jessie.
The main problem is jessie does not support all loadable firmware though kernel 4.9 could actually handle it.

The only solution would be manually selecting the firmware packages one by one and add them.
But to be quite honest : I don’t really have the time to do it and maintain it afterwards :unamused:
With Debian stretch, that problem would not exist anymore.

I got 2.309 working quite well with my Intel NUC6CAYS (Apollo Lake). The main exception is the Intel Wireless-AC 3168 WLAN that does not work with 3.18.25 kernel. The Ethernet in this NUC is Realtek and it works fine.

As indicated by others, there is no boot support for an SD card inserted into the NUC SD slot. Instead, I use a small 16GB Sandisk SSD installed into an Apricorn mSATA enclosure plugged into one of the USB3 ports and it works great. It should also be possible to install into the NUC’s built-in 32GB eMMC flash, but I haven’t tried it.

Intel NUC-Kit NUC6CAYH (Celeron Processor J3455) does support booting from the SD card. I’m sure, because I made my own music player that boots from SD card, or USB stick, at your preference (it also has an overlay system for preventing filesystem corruption in case of abruptly powering it off, in a similar manner as Volumio) . Furthermore it supports the NUC wireless card, because it is based on Archlinux (of course, using Archlinux instead of Debian has its drawbacks).
So I think when Volumio will include Debian Stretch, both the SD card boot and the NUC wireless board will be supported.

Hi gkkpch,

please excuse my late reply, I know, but better late than never. Thank you for providing the experimental Volumio image based on a newer kernel version.

Today I tried the experimental image you provided last year on a Trekstor W3 Mini PC. This is an Intel x64 Atom Z8300 architecture. Your image worked completely fine (GUI, network, USB, etc) - except of the intel hda sst sound chip 808622A8. I got this message in dmesg:

intel_sst_acpi 808622A8:00: No matching machine driver found

This is a little step better than the actual Volumio 2.348 image that does not recognize the chip at all. But unfortunately this does not help me getting the Mini PC running with Volumio. I also found several firmware binaries at intel and tried to install them in /lib/firmware. This makes no difference.

The only thing I could imagine is trying Volumio based on an even younger kernel than the 4.12.8 you built last year. Would you please be so kind and provide one? Perhaps there already is an experimental version that I can give a try?

Best regards,
Robert

there is not much I can do just now, still in the middle of moving house, I hope to pick up the open threads after the weekend. No chance though for an intermediate test version soon, too many other issues on my backlog at the moment, really sorry.

Hi,

good luck with moving to your new house project. I know that will occupie almost 24h/day

I understand that there is no chance for a quick experimental version. As soon as it will be available I will be happy to test it.

Anyway, perhaps it will quickly solve my problem when I will get the kernel using the firmware file. I have the fw_sst_22a8.bin installed in /lib/firmware. Nevertheless the kernel says at startup “intel_sst_acpi 808622A8:00: No matching machine driver found”. Do I have to make the firmware file known in a config file so that the kernel can find it? Or is there something else missing?

Kind regards,
Robert

Firmware only won’t do, you probably need a kernel driver module to actually load it, and that one appears to be missing at the moment.
Could you ping me with a PM in a week or so, so I don’t forget? I need to go over my notes to give you more accurate info.

Hi,

all right, thank you for the hint. So I will not try any more and wait for your advice.
Good luck with your move, I’ll drop you a PM in a week or so.

Have a nice weekend!

Kind regards,
Robert

Hi,

I’m reviving this now old thread. I just got a NUC6CAYH for volumio and encountered some issues.
I get the “findfs unable to resolve uuid” error then the “job control turned off” error that many seem to have got.
Following advice on this thread here is what I did:

  • BIOS update (ver 53)
  • BIOS: boot configured to linux, disabled wlan
  • wrote current volumio x86 image (ver 2.411) to an sd card (tried USB stick too) using win32diskimager (tried etcher too)
I always get the same error, except with USB stick: the screen stays black forever at the time the SD would give the errors.

It seems some people had more success. Is it possible that the newer versions do not work with this NUC? I did not find links to older versions on the website, so I couldn’t experiment with them.
