Using Volumio on a Raspberry Pi 5 w/DAC audio hat to operate an accompanied modern player grand piano.
Have embarked on an automated program to write customized metadata for Volumio and have a question regarding regarding how Volumio internally handles artist images in particular.
If I choose my own artist image to be included as a matched name .jpg in the associated folders the nature of my music sources will find a great many copies of identical artist images.
Provided my naming and actual image are identical will Volumio automatically use only a single copy of an artist image in the same manner I’m sure it does during automatic scans aided by MusicBrainz.org data?
If Volumio will scan the dedicated and attached SSD in this manner (using only one image for internal purposes) will it then automatically scan new entries for matches with current or will I have to rebuild the Volumio database by re-scanning the full SSD?
I intend to use only 300 x 300 pixel .jpg images. If Volumio does not automatically identify the duplicates can I expect serious performance issues with a large music library? My core library is currently about 24,000 titles and 130 gb of lightly compressed .OGG files (not counting any album/artist art) but I have potentially tens of thousands more waiting for additional processing, curation, proper naming and full classification + duplicate detection.
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
If you assign a personal image to each folder, it will only apply to that specific folder.
However, if your folder structure is mapped as previously described, a single artist image placed at the top level will automatically apply to all subfolders.
When adding new images, be sure to clear Volumio’s album cache to ensure updates are recognized.
Thank you again Wheaten. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
It’s not the album art that concerns me as the way you previously described I knew that the one copy would be used for the entire album.
My concern is with the individual artist art that you previously said could be included within the folder ostensibly for each artist used in a “compilation” album.
Due to the nature of my collection I have more than 3,000 and counting unique “artists” because “artist” can be a composer, a pianist or a performing artist/band/conductor depending upon the actual nature of the composition which can be purely physical piano, physical piano plus synthesized accompaniment or “sync” to commercially available CDs.
While identical, the same artist art can appear literally dozens of times among the 600 and counting unique folder paths.
This is why I would like to know if Volumio will index custom artist art that appears many times between folders by automatically identifying identically named and identical .jpg images.
I don’t want to spend a huge amount of coding time to automate the discovery, cropping, sizing, conversion and outright synthesis of “artist” images into ideal 300 x 300 pixel custom images for each and every unique file path where used to find that it bogs down operation that I currently consider effectively instantaneous if as yet poorly indexed because I’ve yet to identify any of the hundreds of “compilation” albums and folders until my program to select an appropriate “artist” for each song based upon its actual characteristics.
I will only include one copy of each “artist art” used in a given folder no matter how many songs are attributed to said artist. It’s the potential lack of cross-indexing between and among the folders/albums that concerns me if I add my own custom art to the entire database.
unfortunate not.
Every album (folder) should have it own cover.jpg
I fully intend to have a custom album image for each and every album/folder. Sorry if that wasn’t clear as I presumed it a prerequisite. I am also automatically producing customized .ogg files (unique metadata) exclusively for Volumio. Therein is my option to automatically add fully customized image data. Simple library additions are an automatic consequence of the code to optimize the entire library. I will maintain my own independent library of album and artist art to be automatically applied to additions to the Volumio drive.
In a previous message you led me to believe that also placing an artist (not album) .jpg image in the folder whose name matches that of the textual artist would result in Volumio using that image for every matching artist within that folder. If true, will Volumio also cross-reference identical artist name/image combinations among/between folders for its internal use?
If Volumio uses custom album and artist data on a folder-by-folder basis I wonder about indexing problems/slowdowns as the inherent nature of player piano music can easily find the exact same artist image in dozens of my folders/albums.
Edit: The reason I may seem to be splitting hairs is that once fully loaded, the Volumio drive will easily have more than 150,000 .OGG files with unique “artists” in the high thousands if not more than 10k. I don’t want to write the code to automate the collection, sizing, and dissemination of all album and artist art if Volumio will loose rapid response as a consequence. My Raspberry Pi is the present SOTA with maximum available memory.
