Hi Allo, im building a replacement for my squeezebox with a raspberry pi 3, ive got it set up with picoreplayer right now as it has the least noise on the pi’s headphone out(have tried volumio, Rune and Max2play) .
Im trying to decide on which Dac for it, Allo Boss, hifiberry, Audiophonics are all on my short list, I love this guys reviews youtube.com/channel/UCR4tuh … PD0q17sPEA have you considered sending him one for review or have you already?
Piero, evaluating a music software from the noise coming out from the PI Jack will for sure lead you to the wrong conclusions: its just bad. Every audiophile distribution (like the one you mentioned) don’t even bother to optimize it, while all the optimization work goes to USB and I2S Playback.
Yup Thanks michelangelo i understand that but wanted to get a set up running while i wait for DAC boards to be in stock, what i dont understand is why with picoreplayer the noise is not an issue its very low but with the others i mentioned its terrible and unlistenable ? Ive heard better sound from a £5 mp3 player headphone out, so why the difference between software? i tried powering with battery and it made no difference to the noise levels.
sorry to go off topic, not meant to be a thread hijack.
Thanks Allo I’ll have to hassle him to get that review done
maybe its to do with patches that Clive (aka JackOfAll) made that have been added to latest picoreplayer, not sure if they are added to Volumio or others
Could be or not but as @michelangelo said, why bother to put any effort into it as it will always stay bad regardless how much effort you put in. Any I2S will most likely be better anyway.
How does your amplification pipeline look like is much more interesting. What/which amp/HT reciever do you want to feed from Volumio (or any other Pi player)? That should determine direction of choosing a DAC or a digital feed (like SPDIF) and than decide for one that has the specs and price you seem fit.

im not putting any more effort into it thats why ive gone back to picoreplayer for now until i get another DAC but would just like to understand why such a big difference between software.
Not sure it matters but the pi is feeding my old but loved Arcam A75 plus amp and sounds far from bad with picoreplayer but like i said unlistenable with others. Price of the DAC for the pi is not really in the equation as none of them are going to break the bank, i dont need digital/SPDIF.
Hi,
I have problem when play DSD file at BOSS+raspberry3+volumio (newest one)
There is short pause every 18-20 second when playing DSD file. Only DSD file.
Already try to change buffer etc. Problem stay.
I try the same setup with rune inside. It play perfectly.
The problem is, i prefer volumio’s sound signature than rune.
Can someone help me?
Each DAC chip has its specifics but most of them do their work well. Probably even or more important is the implementation of the DAC chip into the overall DAC components.
If you consider using any of your Marantz audio functions, it is likely that these functions use the digital parts of the amp and use the internal DAC anyway.
Using the Boss would than mean to go from digital to analog on the Pi/Boss and within the Marants it would go from analog to digital, audioprocessing and again from digital to analog.
So you will only really be using the Boss if you can bypass all digital parts of your amp (for example like NAD does in some of their amps/receivers).
Look at your full chain and think if the chain will become better.
My idea is: NAS file server (all flac files) → Rpi3 + Boss DAC → 2 x RCA to analog in (AVR) → Dali speakers.
This should bypass the internal DAC of the AVR, shouldn’t it?
But I don’t know which DAC is better (“external” = Boss DAC or “internal” in the Marantz AVR = Asahi Kasei AK4458 ).
Find out if the AVR indeed has a bypass function in which it just amplifies your stereo analog input. Using an analog input does not garantee bypassing the internal digital circuitry.
I cannot tell you which DAC chip + implementation is better.
Maybe also try to feed the AVR from the Pi using a Digital signal, preferably coaxial SPDIF.
