ALLO Boss

Can anyone confirm that clicks/pops are gone for BOSS ?

Hi,

first of all, I want to thank all the people who worked yesterday to find a quick answer to our problem. I have to say I was impressed to see that it was investigated and that an anwser was given within 24 hours.

I regret to say it didn’t solve it for me.

What changed : now, there’s only a soft scratch when switching from one track to another, as long as the encoding type is he same.
What didn’t change : switching from one encoding type to another gives varied results, sometimes producing as loud a click as ever …

I took time to test different situations and I put online the material producing the worst result.

The first item (called sample1.flac) is a 88.2/24bit piece of track whereas the other one (sample2.flac) is a 44.1/16bit one.
Switching from no2 to no1 only produces a soft scratch but switching from no1 to no2 systematically produces a real big click.

I hope you’ll be able to reproduce what I get …

sample 1 : dl.free.fr/moXaVR7r4

sample 2 : dl.free.fr/omxR4YqMT

I’ll be waiting for your conclusions

Sincerely,

E.M.

Hi EM

lets wait for more feedback . I know for a fact that PCM has a click when sw from sample rate to a different sample rate .

I’ve got the BOSS connected to a Raspberry Pi 3 and using the VOLT as an amplifier. I’m running volume control as “software” and I’m streaming Tidal via BubbleUPNP. I’ve been trying out the updated image/driver the last couple of nights and it does seem improved over the earlier driver in the sense that the sound (pop, crack, etc.) isn’t as pronounced or maybe just shorter in duration when it does occur.

I tried to consistently recreate the sound switching between the same Tidal tracks but it is fickle and seems to come and go at random so maybe that points back to the sample/bit rate weakness of the PCM51xx. I also couldn’t get it to consistently show up when pausing or restarting tracks.

let us know

Thanks for the continued updates - the update from March 30 seems about the same as the one from the 28th - I couldn’t tell much of a difference. The ‘pops’ are still present but random in my setup. The update from the 28th made the biggest difference by softening and/or shortening the ‘pops’ that were occurring. At this point, they are infrequent/random enough that they don’t cause too much trouble but if additional progress is made I’ll be happy to give the updates a try.

So just downloaded the latest image and yes it is an improvement and thanks for the efforts but it is still there. It is somewhat random in nature in that it can range from a small tick to a more pronounced thud. And swapping between the same tracks does not produce a repeatable result.

I have not looked a the board but I assume it is AC coupled? Just asking as my amp is DC coupled not that it should affect things

New image to test, I apologize but yesterday’s image was not containing the new Allo modules… Sorry for wasting your time:

Sorry guy’s as before really. Less pronounced and not reproduceable

Hi,

thanks again for your efforts but nothing’s changed for me (wether with the previous update or the last one …)

Keep the good work, we’ll be waiting for any improvement !

E.M.

Today i received the Allo Boss.
I installed the board and now i am enjoying the great sound coming from this little gem.
Compared to the Hifiberry DAC + Pro it has deeper bass and broader soundstage, i have to do more listening to come to a conclusion which of the boards is best, but i have a small clue to where it’s leading
I have a question for Allo, just to be sure: can i connect a 5V linear PSU to the pins 1/2 and 15/16 at the J19 and power the Boss and the RPI as well?
[edit]After some measurements (there was a nice 5 volt current between the pins, so i took the plunge.) The boss is now powered over the pins, which also powers the RPI. I am very happy! [/edit]

A new Volumio image will be released shortly with the corrected drivers.

Sorry we made a mistake and did not update the drivers in the last Volumio image… thats why there was no difference .

Yes, sorry my bad.
New drivers included in this image:

The definition I can give to BOSS is incredible!

  • I used the version without the latest drives.

The sound seems “3D” to me.
Listening “Atom heart mother” - pink floyd I have the feeling of the positioning of musicians on stage … the softness of the choir, the orchestra …

I felt a difference in listening to heavy metal bands too.
Blind Guardian, Black Sabbath (drums…my God!!) were wonderful! :smiling_imp:

I also emphasize acoustic music. The guitars have a fantastic sound!

It is! 2 days with the boss and loving every song played on it!

Sorry for my poor english

Hi guys,

You did it ! :stuck_out_tongue: I just installed the latest Volumio (2.136) and the loud clicks are gone :open_mouth:

Just a soft scratch … really not much to complain about compared to the previous situation. Thanks again for taking into account our remarks and looking into them (so many device sellers just think end users are morons !)

Now, I can only recommend this DAC for its musicality and the pleasure I get each time I turn the music on.

Will be following you (both Allo and Michelangelo).

For now, I’l go back to the music without any fear of the big bad click !

Cheers,

E.M.

So downloaded another version. Once again I’d say it is the same save one different, the clicks or thuds are much quiter. Of couse the problem is I know they are there now but it is a deffinate improvement.

Thanks for the great work.

We think that customers are our greatest asset and we get lots of business from people recommending us to friends and family .

If we hear about any issues , we will try our best to solve it now and in the future.

Enjoy the music.

Hi allo,

Any update on the case for BOSS?
I have been waiting for any update on the case from long time. I want to order the case and BOSS in one go.
