ALLO Boss

Yeap its posted on the thread rpi-kali-piano-case-t5284.html

Hello!

I`am interested in using cool Allo Boss DAC with my custom board, not with Raspberry Computer.

Its a pity I have no schematics for the board.
There is all the needed signals in the dac`s given socket pinouts except master clocks switching pin.

Would somebody please explain, which pin is responsible for switching between the 45 MHz crystal and 49 MHz one?

I like very very much… is expected a metal version too?

Alu version will be (to start) only for Sparky + stage + stage (kali or DACs)…still we are a few weeks (at least away)

I like silver very much… is more… elegant  imho

Hi, I am new here and planing a DAC upgrade using RPI3 plus something to it. Is it sound better than stand alone DAC like Audiolab M-Dac or Rega DAC? which I consider to buy. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Welcome  Difficult question to try to answer without more background information.

What is your current setup and why are you considering adding a new/other/different DAC? Assuming you already use a file based source (which one?), how do you do the D/A conversion now?

An Rpi based DAC can sound quite good but is can not match real high-end DACs, but for most listeners that is not a problem.

A standalone DAC can be better but a good source is essential. This is were you can benefit of the I2S options of the Pi.

I will try to give some more info if you can provide more details on your current setup and/or the setup you are aiming for.

Thank you for the answer,

I ordered Rasberry PI 3 and I wonder if Boss DAC will be good enaugh. My current setup is: Xbox One S as player (RPI3 is going to replace that:)), Taga Harmony DA-300 DAC ( I thinking of Audiolab M-DAC as upgrade), amp is Cambridge Audio A500 after modification ( it sound like 5000 usd amp now), Speakers: Brithish speakers - Mordaunt Short Avant 916i. Wires for the speakers are Melodika Purple Rain but I want to exchange for the QED Rubby Anniversary ones.

I had the same loudspeaker, love british sound (but then I discovered the italian way lol)

IMHO it will be an upgrade from what you use now, especially for musicality. Let me know when it arrives

Thanks for your reply. I just wonder if Boss DAC is really good. On other forum some people said that Audophonics MK3 DAC on ESS Sabre 9023 is a better sounded DAC than Audiolab M-DAC after direct test. How we can compare Boss DAC to the one from Audiophonics one?

To PatrickB:

I have a question to you regarding your system configuration: How good digital output to your DAC is the setup of RPI3 with HIFIBerry Digi+? Is it a really audiophile digital, high quality sound?

In my current setup the HF Digi+ now feeds my (NAD) amp directly as I am utilizing the soundprocessing functionality of the NAD and as this works in the digital domain, there is no reason left to first generate an analog signal (which I did before feeding the SPDIF signal into my Audio-GD DAC) into the NAD which than performs an A/D conversion to be able to do processing and than again a D/A conversion.

I must say that in both cases (either directly or via my DAC) I am quite happy with the quality of the SPDIF signal it provides. But I am looking into improvements as well. Especially on powering everything (looking into things like the sBooster) and more accurate clocking. So I am looking at the HF Digi+ Pro and the Digiless as announced by Allo (no real delivery timeline known yet).

Maybe nice to check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD4Pnpd-nlc for a video review of the Pro version.

Looking at your amp having no digital inputs, you need to do the D/A conversion before. If ultimate HiFi is your goal (and budget allows it) a good machine that can do good digital playback and has more than enough power to do a good USB feed into a really good DAC can offer the best possible solution. So an Odroid C2 or x86 NUC with Volumio can provide a real good USB feed. Have a look at the powersupply and preferably make sure that the USB only transports audio and not power also into the DAC (just pollutes).

But if you want to be nicer on your budget (like me) and still strive for good quality, the RPi route using an I2S DAC can be very good as well. At the moment, I think that the Kali + Piano 2.1 (hopefully receiving dual-mono support somewhere in the future) with their PSU are a very good combo as it tries to take care of everything from clean power, proper timing/clocking and low jitter at a very decent price

Just my 2 cents

Thanks for your rply. I just checked few forums regarding the Allo Boss DAC and now looks like it’s beat all Kali+Piano 2.1, also Audiophonics MK2 and MK3 DAC ( both Sabre 9018 and 9023). Some people done test with Audiophonics cards and Audiolab M-Dac and looks like they beat the Audiolab. If it’s true, than Boss DAC is a Killer for it’s price. I think Boss DAC with RPI 3 will improve much in my system. The only problem is that at the moment I can’t find the case for RPI 3 together with Boss DAC.

I have an Audiolab M-dac and I think it’s a master piece with tons of features (IR, preamp, headphone amplifier, balanced/unbalanced output, at least 5 inputs). Before it I had a Denon DA-300 and the M-Dac beats it easily in sound quality. I think if Boss could near at least the Denon it would be a very good result in terms of sound quality for this price.
I’ve ordered an Allo Boss last week for fun (I have a strong feeling that I have to hear it  ) & if I’ll receive it ever ('til now there isn’t any order confirmation from Volumio/Allo) I’ll do a comprasion. Until this could you please link the M-Dac vs Allo Boss test?

This Case shop.max2play.com/en/case-gehau … m_store=de works Fine with this combination.

I too am super interested in a case for my BOSS setup. 3d modeling and printing are not my forté, so I’ll be patiently waiting for the case to be added to the webshop .

In a previous post allo mentioned it would take a few working days after they receive the first model, it has been delayed, so please be patient all (just like me). The waiting makes it all the more magical, right?
