Volumio stops playback on connected device when casting to speaker

Hi I am a new premium user. I have volumio setup on a rpi and have it connected to a hifi receiver via hdmi. Been using this now with great pleasure to stream my music. I also have a some Google cast enabled speakers on my WiFi network. So I upgraded to premium to be able to use all the speakers in my setup.

However, when I select the cast feature, the audio playing to my receiver stops. I was expecting to be able to use this feature to also stream to my speakers, but it seems it is either the local device or the cast device? Can you help me on how I can make this work?

I think casting for Volumio is a an either or output. Whereas Multiroom allows music to be played simultaneously, but only via separate Volumio systems. So you can get Vol1 to play locally or cast to speakers. Or you can use Multiroom to play a track on Vol1 and Vol2 simultaneously.

Thank you for the reply. It seems to be the case as you say, but it is a pity I cannot stream to a cast device and hear my music on my receiver at the same time. It seems my only option is to add some more speakers to the receiver or to cast to a group of speakers instead?

Does anyone know if the option to play locally and cast simultaneously will be supported in the future? As it is my usecase for upgrading to the premium plan.

Thank you.

Hi Maac, this won’t be supported in the future as we can’t play in perfect sync with Chromecast / Sonos and Volumio.

Can you explain why this would make sense to you? If there’s an alternate use case we can think about it

Hi, thanks for the reply. It is great to see how active the volumio community is.

My use case is that I was hoping to be able to expand the audio playing from my rpi on my receiver in my lounge area (where I have the best audio setup for listening) to my kitchen area and another area (where the audio quality is less important to me). For that purpose I have the google cast speakers.

So right now I can only cast to the kitchen area (then the lounge area doest play) or listen to the receiver audio. As said I could add additional speakers to create another audio zone for the receiver instead and solve it that way, but to be able to add a cast device in a flexible way would have been a great solution!

Thanks again for considering this.

So you wanted to play on all these zone simoultaneously? Is that correct?

Yes that would be the use case for me.

Thank you.
