Volumio Rivo first impressions

Hello, apologies I didn’t contact support first. got mail. thank you

I have been running the Rivo for over two weeks now and I am very please with the SQ after having owned a Project Stream Box S2 Ultra for nearly two years. The Rivo is connected to a Ifi iPower X, streaming via ethernet to a Cisco 2969 switch using Audioquest Cinnamon ethernet cables and finally using a DIY USB cable from the Rivo to my SPL Diamond DAC. Sounds significantly better than my Project in the areas of sound staging (3D), dynamic range (quieter background perhaps) and well saturated tonal colours. The Project is good but Rivo is much better. I plan to upgrade the power supply to an Ifi iPower Elite because of what the iPower X has brought to the table thus far.

On another note, I did encounter the following issue at the start. It did not allow me to connect to Qobuzz. To connect I had to subscribe to Premium so I sent a support mail to Rivo. Just immediately after sending the mail, I decided to perform a factory reset using the ‘factory_reset’ file. As a result of the reset I was able to connect to Qobuzz. I updated the s/w to the Jan 2024 version and it is now running flawlessly. Still when I want to add plugins, it requires me to subscribe to Premium, which is rather odd but not complaining as I probably have 80% of the Premium features. There is no Spotify connect but I don’t do Spotify. The other thing I have discovered is that the more powerful your device that is use to run your Volumio App, the quicker the response time in loading and reloading the app. I found this out when I compared the iPhone 14 to an old iPad Mini usage of the app. By the way, I have also done an AB comparison of the Project Stream Box and a Lumin U1 Mini with modified power supply and they sounded almost identical. For me it was a side way move in terms of SQ. So well done Volumio for exceeding the standard expected of this price.

it’s not required a premium account, just a free my-volumio account is enough

Report back SQ difference when Elite is up and running!

I have now run the Rivo with the Ifi Elite Power supply for about a week. I have sold my Ifi Power X before I bought the Elite so my comparison of the two is based on memory based on some obvious differences, First the Elite versus the supplied power supply. Obvious improvements are:

  • Louder (or quieter background) at the same volume
  • Significantly clearer, like a veil has been lifted
  • Clearer leading edges, voices and instruments
  • More natural and real sounding musical instruments and voices - acoustic guitar sounds real, voices have texture
  • Better differentiation of dynamic range
  • A general calmness in musical flow
  • Better instruments and voice separation
  • More obvious micro details
  • Better soundstage focus

When compared to the IPower X, these obvious difference came to mind:

  • Overall smoother, calmer and slightly more refine sounding than IPower X
  • Definitely better defined (tuneful) bass
  • Top-end slightly more refine with clearer and cleaner bells and cymbals.
  • Midrange ever slightly better with separation of instrument and voices.

My system consist of an Audia Flight FLS9 Int. amp, SPL Diamond DAC and Dynaudio C1 Platinum. I use the preamp on the DAC and run XLR into the Direct input of my amp. Your system may or may not capture these differences but keen to hear from anyone who has a direct experience with the Ifi Elite on their Rivo or Primo.

Since this morning my Rivo’s LED at the center of the front button blinks green. Volumio App does not find it. There is not microSD card visible from the outside.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

EDIT: I was able to perform a factory as described here. All is well again.

Just out of interest, which wifi standard has the Rivo adopted for its 5Ghz band? Is it N, AC or AX?

Cheers.

Just to share my impressions of the Rivo as a replacement of the Primo after having the Primo 1 for more than a year and now using the Rivo for two weeks:

1 - The Rivo has a much better stereo image (width and depth) and a more relaxed presentation.
This alone is worth the upgrade.

2 - It connects more stable to my UPnP server Minim running on a Synology NAS
I had to force the Primo after each reboot to restart the UPnP client. Not needed anymore with the Rivo.

3 - The Rivo needs way less power than the Primo
My linear power supply stays much cooler than before.
The case of the Rivo stays pretty cool even after streaming several days continuously and even goes to sleep mode when not used at all.
This is another feature well worth the upgrade.

4 - The Rivo is able to deliver native DSD to my Audio Analogue AADac
At least for 64 and 128 Bit DSD.
The Primo is not able to do this. It always sends PCM.
Another big win for the Rivo.

I only need a streamer with no DAC features and the Rivo is absolutely fantastic.
I am happy that I moved from Primo to Rivo.

Having written to both Volumio (Davide) and Qobuz (Marina), I thought I will also open this question to the community while waiting for a reply from Volumio.
Recently, after almost three weeks of listening to Qobuz via the Volumio app in the Rivo, it has suddenly decided not to connect to Qobuz. After I press connect button, it takes me to the Qobuz sign-in page and after signing-me in, Qobuz would send me back to the Volumio app, which is what has been happening in the past. The Qobuz button on the app does not have the ‘log-off’ words which shows that it is not connected. If I reconnect immediately, it would send me to the Qobuz page with the word Back and send me back to the app without being connected. To address the issue form their end, Qobuz has reset my password and their server and also have checked my connection and did not find any issue. I have factory reset the Rivo a number of times, turn off/on my router, devices and the Rivo, but it is till not connecting. Anyone with similar experience and managed to resolve the connection issue?

Did you also tried to log out of My Volumio and back in again? That fixes most of these kind of problems in my experience

Yes I have, many times. Qobuz checked my IP address and reset their server and password for me when I asked them for assistance. I used my old Project Stream Box S2 Ultra to see whether the problem is caused by my network but it wasn’t as the Project connected to Qobuz straight away without any problem. The Project also uses the Volumio App.

Got an external display for the rivo (non-touch - hdmi only, 1920x1280). Aspect ratio is a bit wrong, everything is vertically stretched (for example, the circle around the play/pause button looks like an ellipse). Chances to get it fixed?

Besides, a kind of screen saver activates once in a while, the screen goes black even the music is playing, video out can be re-enabled with usb keyboard. Can i turn it this screen saver completely off?

I have the same issue on a 1920x1200 screen. The image is vertically stretched. I signalled this a while ago, but it seems the issue was never fixed.

There is the way to change hdmi resolution in config files (it has a khadas vim3l inside):
enable ssh in dev settings ({rivo ip}/dev)
ssh to the rivo (user/pwd: volumio/volumio)
cd /boot
nano env.user.txt
add the line: hdmimode=1920x1200p60hz
reboot

1920x1280 is not supported for my screen, but 1920x1200 looks better than 1080.

All the supported resolutions by vim:

To disable screensaver and display power management:

export DISPLAY=:0.0
sudo xset s off
sudo xset s noblank
sudo xset -dpms

Hello,
If you had to connect the RIVO to a high end DAC, which audio output would you use USB or AES/EBU? Thanks.

Based on a number of online reviews, the USB appears to be the recommended connection, that is if your DAC has implemented a good USB input. The second recommended connection is AES/EBU. I have run coax digital out to a very old Theta Cobalt 307 DAC and it sounds surprisingly good. The Cobalt does not have an AES or a USB connection. I prefer the sound from my SPL Diamond DAC via USB.
