Has any one tried the old volumio primo hifi edition just as pure transport streamer with spdif coax cable to a good quality dac?? Can it deliver a good noise free signal like volumio rivo. Is it worth it or little outdated due internal build.
2nd question: will Primo hifi edition get volumio 4 or is volumio 3 the end game - will still get some updates on the volumio 3
I believe Volumio Primo Hi-Fi Edition is what I call Volumio Primo v1 :):
If that is the case I have one of these and I can tell you that, as a transport streamer is still very competent (soundwise).
I even considere it a very good quality streamer/DAC using it’s internal DAC / analog outputs.
But COAX out to my Topping D10S DAC or / and USB out to my Topping E70 DAC is pristine.
If you will use it solely as a transport it is very competent (I’m not using it now, but I could even managed to use it with the old peppymeter screensaver and FusionDSP simultaneously without issues).
I believe that @volumio is still checking about possible evolution to Volumio 4 (not sure), but now is still on a stable Volumio v3 softwre.
If you just want it as music transport or even use is internal DAC as it is, it’s a good device.
If you want to be kept on latest versions of plugins, software updates and so on it might be a risky investment due to a kind of outdated main board hardware
PS - I now run Volumio on a Pi5 / 5GB but still like very much my Volumio Primo (v1). Will reinstall it as a second system (maybe trying multi-room with my now main Volumio).
