Hi,
I’m trying to return to Volumio (I’ve used two installations and resigned because they were very unstable and problematic).
My setup:
RPi3B v1.2
TP-link 725
Hifiberry Digi2 Pro v2.1
32GB A1 microSD
I’ve downloaded the newest stable image and installed it on the SD card via Raspberry Pi Imager.
Then I’ve connected everything up and tried to configure Volumio.
I got no AP (I can’t use Ethrnet, don’t ask), so I’ve tried to configure it using terminal (Connecting my monitor via HDMI and a keyboard with a dongle).
I can acess the OS (it boots giving only one error:systemapd.service: failed).
I can’t however change anything, because after maybe a minute or so the screen goes completely black (I’ve tried to disable power saving in config, to no avail), the only solution is to power cycle the board.
I’ve disabled internal Wi-Fi and BT, it didn’t change anything.
Am I doing something wrong?
It’s yet another time when Volumio, which supposed to be easy to configure, giving me such a hard time.
Possibly a bad image on your card.
Format the SD card freshly
Download the latest volumio file and unzip
Use Raspberry Pi imager to write the img to your SD card
no config or customisation during this step
don’t use the img offered in RPi Imager, use what you downloaded from volumio
Make sure you have the latest version of the volumio app on your phone
Start your R Pi with the fresh SD card in it
Give it 5 or 10 mins to start and settle (R Pi 3 is a bit slower with Volumio 4)
Use the app to connect to the volumio hotspot
Follow the steps presented in the app.
The volumio setup and config has never been easier and better that it is with V4 and the later generations of the app.
I did exactly that on two confirmed working SD cards with two RPi3b boards and with two (confirmed working) WiFi dongles. There’s no AP.
My more immediate issue though is the screen going blank after two minutes or so. I could troubleshoot the AP issue, but I have no way for copying the logs etc.
I will setup an ethernet port just for configuration and see if this helps for my connection issue, but it still will not fix the disappearing terminal.
You don’t need the terminal and screen to get it setup and working.
Have you allowed the Volumio app to “discover/scan” or whatever it’s called on your network?
Maybe un-install and re-install the app on your phone and be careful about allowing it permission to discover/scan your local network.
Why are you using a wi-fi dongle?
R Pi 3B Connectivity: Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy (BLE)
Try it with the native wi-fi interface (remove the dongle before first boot).
If it would emit an AP, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
The Volumio app is in the newest version, with all the necessary permissions.
Unfortunatley not only my phone, but also other devices can;t se the AP.
The dongle is, as I’ve wrote above the TPlink TL-WN725N.
The AP doesn’t work with the internal Wifi, nor with the TPlink.
I’ve used the same setup previously, also with the older Volumio, without any issues.
I have three of those (they are quite old) and they’ve worked with my Rpi3B’s for many years (at least 5-6) in different projects. This is the first time I’m seeing any issues with them at all.
Well, it is what it is. What are the suggested dongles for Volumio 4?
I’d prefer to buy something reliable nad not from aliexpress or similar.
Let’s hope the community steps in with working dongles, for a rpi3.
Only have one for testing x86 device, for all other testing I use the onboard WiFi.
Keyword here is test, as normally all devices are wired.
I just set up a fresh Volumio 4 install on a Raspberry Pi 3B+.
I booted the fresh micro SD card and left it for 5 mins or so, then I opened the app on my iPhone, it almost immediately showed me the fresh Volumio and allowed me to set it up and add it to my wi-fi.
I think that initial recognition is by Bluetooth and it really speeds up the initial setup process. Do you still not see the new Volumio in the app after you start your fresh SD card?
