Volumio 2 for Cuboxi

Ok I am now running the correct version and it seems to be working ok. I’ll test it over the next few days.

One minor glitch I’ve noticed with the UI is that toggle boxes do not display correctly. I don’t recall if this was the case on the 09-07 build, but pretty sure it wasn’t there on an older 3.14 kernel build. See the three on/off toggles in the attachment. Is this a known problem ?
Toggle.png

No, version 2.425 is the first version with a working 4.14 kernel and solves earlier ethernet and usb performance issues, boot problems with cubox i4, crashes while building large libraries (known from 3.14).
It could have solved hdmi issues as well, you will have to test that yourself.

It is highly unlikely that the toggle box issues are related to the kernel version, you might have to drop a question in the help section.

Updated the OP for Volumio for Cuboxi V2.425 volumio-2.425-2018-07-20-cuboxi with Kernel 4.14.56-cubox (armbian)

These images have proved to work on cubox devices, feedback from hummingboard users would be very welcome.

I wasn’t suggesting that the kernel was responsible for toggle box issue. Just pointing out that the toggle box issue was not there in the older build (in this thread) that contained the 3.14 kernel as I ran that version for quite a while.

I assume that you are building the latest development version of Volumio each time you make an image, thus later builds include a slightly later dev version of the volumio base system, not just kernel changes ?

Yes, central builds are always with the latest Volumio version.
I checked your issue a few minutes ago (as I was focussing on the kernel, not on Volumio), but cannot confirm it.
It works correctly here, used Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari.
Could it be you were building a library and the screen was not refreshing properly during that time?

Some quick feedback after I tried updated versions last night, using cubox-i2 Ultra.

  • V 2.425: No boot
  • V 2.417: all OK.

Happy so far with 2.417, but boot issues seem not completely resolved with Kernel 4.14.56-cubox (armbian).

Thanx gkkpch for the effort and update; real appreciated!

Sorry to hear that.
Armbian has updated their kernel, which obviously does not work for an i2x Ultra.
Luckily I still have the kernel files to build future Volumio versions, but without any hope on kernel updates at the moment.
However, I fear there will be no more new builds for the near future, I really have no time to focus completely on cubox, especially when I don’t have the hardware to work with. Hope people understand this.

We’re in the middle of a major upgrade to Debian stretch, which has priority.
I will update the OP and make 2.417 the current.

(Win 7 network + Cubox) can’t find the server at volumio.loc

Postby Caroline Says » Yesterday 11:21
Hello people. I have been overjoyed at the Cubox image becoming available.

I’ve flashed the latest image of Volumio for cubox to the cubox by way of the microSD, put in a network cable, and powered up the cubox. The cubox is not recognised - volumio spins and spins and gives the error message ‘can’t find the server’

PC is Windows 7, and the browser is Firefox.

The network cable works - it was doing duty to the NAS before I connected it to the Cubox. To check, I have used another cable that was on the network that was connected to the internet radio.

I have tried volumio and volumio/local/DEV with the same error message.

Can someone please tell me how I can get the cubox to to find the server at volumio.local

Thank you kindly!

Try 192.168.1.155 (get the IP address from your router).

Thank you for the quick reply. But volumio.local does not work.

192.168.etc. etc [my router address] gives me access to my router. It does not give me volumio. I logged in to my router, just in case. No, still no volumio.

Also, I have rebooted the main PC while the cubox was running. That also does not result in volumio finding the server.

The router says the devices on the network (Cables) do not include the cubox, even though it has a cable plugged in. This matches what Windows 7 Networking says about the HomeGroup: cubox is not detected by Windows.

The image file is this one:
volumio-2.417-2018-07-09-cuboxi.img

I am running bonjour. Is that a good thing to do?

What next, please?

Please tell us what cubox model you have and please, please use our dedicated cubox thread in the Community Portings section for these sort of questions and follow up

[end snips]

The Cubox is I4P-300D-MAC

Does the image require a fresh clean install every time, or should I attempt multiple reboots (first start-up, the 5-minutes-or-more MicroSD card loading) from the same image?

Caroline,
a one-off fresh install is all you need.
Do you know how to connect the cubox to your pc to look at the console?
If you do, please login at the prompt you get, user ‘volumio’, password also ‘volumio’.
With ‘ifconfig -a’ you should see your ip address.
Otherwise there is also a free PC tool called ‘Advanced IP Scanner’ which you can use to scan all ip addresses on your network, it will give you a list, the one you are looking for is the one with the name ‘volumio.local’

Thank you for keeping on with the help, this is good.

Do you know how to connect the cubox to your pc to look at the console
No, I do not know what is meant by the ‘console’

What I did do was this: I ran the Advanced IP scanner. It gave me 7 IP addresses on my network, all Alive, but none showed name of Volumio.

One of these Alive addresses is for the NAS which is attached by cable to the router. The NAS is 192.168.0.14. To double-check the cable connection to the NAS, from my PC I shifted a music folder from one directory on the NAS into another location on the NAS and then played a music file. Everything worked from my PC - moving files, playing files.

Beside the NAS is the Cubox. Knowing the cable worked, I took the cable from the NAS and plugged it into the Cubox, while the power was off to the cubox. Then I repowered the cubox and then ran the Advanced IP Scanner. The IP address 192.168.0.14 showed as Dead, with just 6 addresses Alive and still no Volumio name appearing.

I put IP address 192.168.0.14 into my browsers. I got this message: Server not found. Pale Moon can’t find the server at 192.068.0.14. On Chrome I got 192.168.0.14 took too long to respond.

Please note I did not reboot my PC when I swapped the cable from the NAS into the Cubox.

The cubox lights up red when the power is on and the power supply is the 5 volts wall wart that it should be. The power supply is from a regulated transformer that provides heavy-duty protection from mains spikes.

To run applications or distributions on your CuBox-i, you must install them on the microSD
card. Visit this link for more details: wiki.solid-run.com/
6. Once you have your CuBox-i, microSD and power adapter ready, insert the micro SD in the
microSD slot with the microSD pins facing up. DONE
7. Internet: If you have purchased I1-300-D, I1W-300-D, I2-300-D, I2W-300-D- first connect an
Ethernet cable to your CuBox-i device. Models I2eX-300-D, I2eXw-300-D and I4P-300-D, can be

I’ve downloaded and installed Bonjour but it has a plugin that works only with MS Internet Explorer, it seems. Due to Explorer’s behaviour it has been eradicated from my PC as much as I can achieve, I never want Windows 10. Would a Bonjour plugin that works for Firefox or Chrome be available?

@Caroline says
I am having a tough time following what you are saying, just a lot of copying and pasting and some less than detailed input from you really confuses me on the problem you may be having or just lack of general computer and networking experience. I’m not quite sure which one. Maybe it is bad English on your part? Where about in the world are you?

@thederk123, yes, confusing and yes, we can’t cover for all, but let us try find the source of the problem.
In case you can help with the console issue, all the better.

I believe Caroline’s unit does not boot properly, perhaps her i4 is not supported after all with the current kernel?
For whatever reason, I need to have a look at the boot log.

Now, Caroline, this needs you to be able to work with the console on a PC.
The Solidrun forum, or someone reading/ helping here, can show you how to use it and how to catch a boot log with putty.
I need that log, without it there is absolutely no way to help.
Won’t be able to look at it for at least the next week or so, at least not check any of it as I’m on the road.
If you are able to publish a log, I will read it.

Short feedback.

V2.425 no audio over spdif, Ethernet terrible slow
V2.4.17 no boot
V2.414 seems to work without great problems

Cubox i4Pro

Hello,

I have the CuboxI4Pro and tried the latest version, Volumio 2.417, but it does not bootup, nothing happened. I tried the previous one version 2.414 from 7/7/18 and this image works great.

Before, I couldn’t realize a network share with my Synology NAS. Now Volumio is seeing Media drives/shares automatically. So it is seeing the NFS share. No building anymore, great.

Further, I have my uPNP/DNLA back. I can use my favorite uPnP/DNLA BubbleUPnP (Android App) again. With the very good App form Volumio it is strictly not necessary anymore, but It is necessary when you need Tidal or Qobuz by proxy via this App.

So I’m happy. If there is a later image which should work as well, I like to hear and/or exeriences from other CuboxI users.

Regards Harold

I have been using a cubox-i4 Volumio for a long time and it has served me well.

The recent MyVolumio announcement made me examine the version and it was way out of date.
I created a new SDCard from
(page 8 of this blog)
updates.volumio.org/cuboxi/volum … xi.img.zip
(ambian kernel)
and took it for a spin

setup
HDMI->TV->Onkyo Amp
SPDIF->Onkyo Amp
USB->DAC with Combo384 Amanero chip->Onkyo Amp or BT transmitter with APT-X to headphones

DLNA servers, SMB/CIFS folders, Spotify, some Web Radio stations, some podcasts

The HDMI session displayed on the TV (volumio/volumio needed to log in) and was useful to find that vers=1.0 was needed to mount the SMB/CIFS folder.
SSH worked too.
The hotspot showed in my wifi searches.
It was also pleasing to note that the Android app is much more stable and stayed in session wihout constantly ‘searching for device’.

All of the sources worked through all of the output channels and there have been no problems over several days.

This is all good news and even more so given that the cubox-i is still a maintained Armbian device whose ‘next’ kernel is later in the series used to build this Volumio image and the ‘dev’ kernel is now 4.19 from examining the changelog. Good future proofing.

So it should be possible to build a cubx-i version capable of using the MyVolumio service.
I’m quite happy to assist with testing if needed.

There is a newer version out, please could someone help testing this:
volumio-2.518-2018-12-22-cuboxi

myVolumio has not been integrated yet, this is in the pipeline (as for some other portings that have not been done yet).

I’m also planning to test a new version of the Armbian kernel, but time is a little short just now.
Multiple user requests do tend to influence priorities

From the 28th december I’m looking for volunteers to test a new version with kernel 4.14.90 and a patch for improved automatic DSD Direct detection.
Anyone with a Thesycon (nuprime dac-9 or a Topping) or other XMOS DAC ?
That would be great!

Still no Audio over spdif.
