Volume Normalization - How does this setting work, and why/how does it affect sound quality?

Hello all.

I have some very newbie questions regarding 2 toggles in the General Playback Settings menu, as I haven’t been able to find much information about them: Volume Normalization and DSD Auto Volume Level.

As I run Volumio at max output level / controlled from my DAC’s own volume control, I don’t perceive any difference in volume levels on DSD files when flicking the DSD Auto Volume Level toggle on. Because of this, I guess the only thing this switch does is set volume to 100% for DSD playback whenever output volume is set to any value lower than that, and that’s it. Is that what it does? If so, please confirm.

Now, Volume Normalization however does have an impact on volume output even when Volumio output is already at 100%, perceivable on low-level or low-volume DSD files and FLAC. What is this setting doing, and how can it impact sound quality? Is setting this to “on” not bit-perfect anymore?

Thanks for your help!
