Hello I have a quick question. I’m trying to build a small hi-fi system right now. I have a small mini desktop PC attached to it an SMSL SU-1 (USB DAC). I use Volumio as software. The DAC is currently connected to an active speaker (BANG&OLUFSEN). With some songs I have an overdrive on the speaker. I can’t adjust anything on the USB DAC and I can’t adjust the volume in Volumio either. Does anyone have a similar device with such a problem?
Hey @mrmacintosh
It sounds like you’re experiencing issues with signal overdriving due to lack of control over the output levels. Here are some potential solutions to troubleshoot and resolve this:
1. Check Volumio Settings
- Volume Mixer Type: In Volumio settings, go to Playback Options and set the Volume Mixer Type to Software. This will allow you to control the volume directly within Volumio.
- Max Volume Level: Check if the maximum volume level is set too high in Volumio. Lower it to around 70-80% to prevent overdrive.
- Enable Volume Normalization: Consider enabling volume normalization in Volumio to balance output levels for tracks with varying loudness.
2. External Volume Control
- Add a Preamp or Passive Volume Control: If your SMSL SU-1 DAC has no volume control, you can insert a preamp or a passive volume controller between the DAC and your active speakers. This will give you physical control over the output level.
- Use the Speaker’s Volume Control: If your BANG&OLUFSEN speakers have adjustable volume, lower their input sensitivity or overall volume.
3. Check DAC Output
- The SMSL SU-1 might output at a fixed line-level, which could be too high for your speakers. Unfortunately, this cannot be adjusted on the DAC itself if there is no control interface. Pairing it with a device that allows attenuation would help.
4. Inspect Audio Files
- Some songs may have overly high dynamic ranges or clipping. Ensure the source files are not distorted.
- Use a tool like ReplayGain to normalize the audio levels of your music files.
5. Update Volumio and Device Firmware
- Ensure that your Volumio software and the DAC’s firmware (if applicable) are updated to the latest versions, as updates may resolve such issues.
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, please share more details, such as:
- Specific models of the speakers.
- How you are controlling the playback volume right now.
- Any configurations in Volumio or the DAC settings you’ve already tried.
Kind Regards,
