Hi everyone,
I’m currently using Volumio on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with an Allo DigiOne for digital audio transport, but I’m considering upgrading to a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, mainly because my music library is growing significantly and, more importantly, I’d like to achieve better network stability and efficiency when using MyVolumio remotely (play.volumio.com).
Before making the switch, I’d like to clarify a few things with those who have experience with this setup:
- Allo DigiOne Compatibility & Cooling Considerations
- Is the DigiOne fully supported on the Raspberry Pi 5, or are there any known issues?
- Does the DigiOne leave enough space for cooling solutions (passive heatsinks, fans), or does it become an issue?
- Any recommendations for cooling solutions that work well with this setup?
- I expect better stability and speed for SSH tunneling compared to the Pi 3B+, thanks to the Pi 5’s improved processing power and network performance. Is this actually the case? Has anyone noticed a significant improvement when controlling Volumio remotely via MyVolumio on the Pi 5?
For context:
- I don’t use FusionDSP or any plugins that require extra processing power.
- I don’t use USB inputs since I rely on the Allo DigiOne for coaxial output and plan to use an internal NVMe SSD for storage.
- My Raspberry Pi is connected via Ethernet (so I don’t use Wi-Fi).
In terms of audio quality, I assume there won’t be a noticeable difference since the DigiOne should still provide a bit-perfect digital output.
Are there any other factors I should consider? Do you think this upgrade is really worth it?
The alternative is to stick with my current setup, trim my library by removing albums I’m less interested in and don’t listen to, and accept the limitations of MyVolumio (unless upgrading to a Pi 5 would genuinely allow me to overcome them).
Thanks in advance!
