Upgrade to 3.807, Allo Piano 2.1 not working as Dual Stereo anymore?

Prerequisites

Volumio Information

Volumio Version:
Hardware: Raspberry Pi 3
DAC: Allo Piano 2.1 + Kali Reclocker. 1 amp connected to 1 set of RCA, Another amp to another set of RCA

Debug Log

http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/8lsQrWZ.html

Steps to Reproduce [my case]

  1. Have same DAC hardware (Allo Piano 2.1)
  2. Upgrade to 3.807
  3. Re set the sampling algo (32bits following known issues) [parameters lost during this update, contrary to others]
  4. Try to play as usual
  5. Only 1 set of RCA has signal, not the other

Additional Information

Usually, upgrades don’t impact resampling algorithm parameters or Allo Piano functionning modes (Dual-Mono, Dual Stereo, etc etc)

Putting some updates there:

  1. Alsamixer picture provided
  2. In Dual-Stereo mode, only 1 set of RCA is working, even if i put some “volume/gain” on the “Main Ana” channel & “Sub Ana” channel located on the right side of the other “Main Ana” and “Main Dee”. The “volume/gain” is either 0 or +0.8dB
  3. In Dual Mono mode, it seems only 1 RCA output is working (not 1 set of RCA, only 1 out of the 4 present on the board)

Don’t know if useful to anybody. I can try things if somebody wants.

Have a nice day

Hey @laluciol6990,

Thanks for the detailed report and the alsamixer screenshot - very helpful for diagnosing issues with the Allo Piano 2.1 on Volumio 3.807.

Given your description and the visible state of the mixer, it’s possible the DAC configuration or mixer state got partially corrupted or wasn’t reapplied cleanly after the upgrade. Rather than trying to patch it via shell-level amixer commands, I suggest using a full UI-driven reset process with physical power cycles in between to eliminate any persistent or stalled state.

Recommended Recovery Procedure

  1. Switch Output to a Generic Device

    • Go to Playback Options → Output Device.
    • Set it to a non-DAC output like “Audio Jack” or “Phono”.
    • Confirm and let the system apply it fully.
  2. Perform a Full Power-Off

    • Do a hard shutdown (power off completely).
    • Wait ~10–15 seconds to allow hardware and Volumio state to clear.
  3. Reconfigure DAC in UI

    • Power the unit back on.
    • Go to Playback Options → Output Device.
    • Re-select Allo Piano 2.1 from the DAC list.
    • Choose your intended mode (Dual Stereo, etc.).
  4. Hard Power-Off Again

    • After applying DAC settings, do another hard shutdown.
    • This forces a fresh init of the DAC overlay and mixer on next boot.
  5. Final Check

    • Boot normally.
    • Play audio and verify if both RCA output sets are now active.
    • Optionally, check alsamixer again to confirm proper gain levels across Main and Sub channels.

This UI-based reset method ensures you’re not left in an inconsistent mixer state after the upgrade. If both RCAs still don’t output properly after this clean sequence, that would point to a potential regression introduced in 3.807.

Happy to dig further if needed. Let us know how it goes.

Kind Regards,

My Piano 2.1 with Kali is working well in Dual Mono mode with v3.812 as well with v0.67 alpha

Glad to hear your Piano 2.1 is still singing in Dual Mono - mine, although officially extinct, is apparently a happy dodo too: still alive and kicking no matter what mode I configure it in.

Which is exactly why I’m suspicious. Something sinister might’ve happened during the upgrade… a silent corruption, a mixer gremlin, maybe even a cursed asound.state.

The truly scary part?
What if I missed something?
Worse - what if I don’t know what I missed… until it breaks again?

Feels like I’m waiting for Schrödinger’s DAC bug to reveal itself.

Let’s hope this was just a haunted upgrade and not a foreshadowing.

Kind Regards,

Hi

Thanks for your suggestion.
Sadly, it didn’t worked. I did the workflow suggested by @nerd twice. Only 1 set of RCA output working in Dual Stereo mode
Tested audio and checked with alsamixer.
I know that after the upgrade to 3.807, i had to reset the sampling to 32bits (known bug for Allo Piano to play mp3). It didn’t happened in a long time, so my system’s upgrade did more than the usual.

If you think i should try to do a proper brand new imaging of the latest Volumio image for a “brand new” install, tell me.
I could try in a few days.

Have a nice day

Hey @laluciol6990

Thanks for trying the full reset workflow - sorry to hear it didn’t resolve the issue.

The fact that your Piano 2.1 now only outputs on one RCA pair even after a clean reconfigure with hard stops suggests something in the 3.807 upgrade altered more than expected - maybe a mixer profile mismatch or incomplete overlay load. Your note about having to reset sampling to 32 bits (the old MP3 bug) lines up with this theory: this upgrade likely touched low-level audio settings that previous updates didn’t.

Since both @Josh2000 and I are on v3.812, and our units are working in Dual Stereo and Dual Mono, upgrading might be a logical next step - no guarantees, but it’s worth a shot.

If that still fails, yes - a full re-image could rule out any persistent corruption left from 3.807’s upgrade path. I’d recommend keeping that as your fallback plan.

Appreciate your detailed testing - you’re not alone in this, and your notes help everyone chasing these gremlins.

Let us know how 3.812 treats the dodo.

Kind Regards,

Hi

Upgraded to 3.812: same results.
I will re-image to make a clean install later some time
Knowing your setup is working with the same DAC config (Kali+Piano 2.1) indicates it should be ok down the road.

Hi

Full Re-image restored Volumio+Kali+Piano2.1 to its expected state!
Current using Dual Stereo (to use 1 amp or the other…) like i used to.
Alsamixer screenshot attached
Thanks for mentionning that you (@nerd & @Josh2000 ) had the same setup.
[almost no other DAC has dual outputs like this without going through too much trouble…hence me keeping the Piano as long as possible…]

Have a nice day and thanks again!
