Is there a repository to update mpd to the latest version? Or should i compile from source?
Also is there a reason why dev has chosen to use a rather old version of mpd for this release?

Why do you want to update it? any new features?
Here you can see the release note for the 13 (!) versions that have been releaased ever since 0.17 was out.
Quite a lot of bugfixes, a complete rewrite to C++ etc, just check it out…
Might not be too difficult to have some prebuild binaries…
