Unknown album/unknown artist created in error

I’m running Volumio 3.569 on a Raspberry Pi 4. I’ve been ripping my CDs using Windows Media Player on my laptop, set up to automatically rip a CD directly into my NAS drive in *.flac format whenever I insert a CD.

I’ve noticed that when WMP starts the ripping process, it initially does not have album or artist names, and for the first half of the first track it creates a directory entry on the NAS called unknown artist / unknown album. But before it finishes that first track, it finds the name, renames the directories, and finishes the CD. Note: at the end of the process, the directories are correctly named. Also note: although I call it a NAS, it’s really a cifs-formatted drive attached to my Netgear router. One of my Raspberry Pi’s shares it as nfs or samba to the rest of the network, so I treat it as a NAS, although I have it defined directly inside Volumio.

However, when I pull up the album list in Volumio, it lists “unidentified album (mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss)” and “unknown artist”, plus the “real” album & artist. It includes track #1 in the unidentified album, and the rest in the real album. The unidentified and real albums both show the same album cover. Interestingly enough, the unidentified album shows up in the list either just before or just after the real album, regardless of how I tell it to sort the list. Again, I want to point out that the files are in the correct locations with the correct filenames on the disk.

Another oddity is that if I go in through home / music library / NAS / readyshare, and pick one of the artists and albums that has this problem, it lists the album, and if I click it, it shows me all the tracks in the albums. BUT, all the tracks except the first one shows the track title, album name, and artist name. But the first track shows “track 1”, “unknown album”, and"unknown artist", even though I got there by selecting a specific, known album & artist. Weird, huh?

This is the observed characteristic, with both the app and the browser interface. I tried rescanning multiple times. I tried creating a brand new SD card. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling the app on my phone. I tried removing & redefining the NAS source. I tried moving the files to my laptop’s hard drive, then copying them back. Nothing changes this characteristic. I’ve run out of things to try.

I will say that there are a couples of albums that I ripped directly to my laptop then copied them to the NAS, before I found out I could go directly to the NAS, and those all seem to be correct. Is this the problem? I hope not, because I don’t want the files to have to pass through my laptop. (And I really don’t want to have to re-rip the albums that already went directly to the NAS.)

I don’t have my audio system set up yet, so I haven’t been able to confirm that the “unidentified” tracks play okay. I’m working on ripping all my CDs and playing with the interface. But if this is going to happen to all my CDs in Volumio, I’m not sure I will consider it to be a usable system. (Although, I will also admit that I don’t know if any other system has this problem or not. Volumio is the only one I’ve played with at this point.)

Can anyone help me with this?
