Does that mean that both Tidal in Volumio and Tidal Connect will stream high-res flacs?

Yes, that’s the plan.

new Volumio update!!!
I’m playing 192khz flac via tidal connect now!!!
Allo USBridge Sig(rpi)

This is a beta update, you are advised not to set in test mode and update

Will Hi-Res get priority over MQA (like in the Tidal apps) or will we be able to choose freely between the two formats (if both are available)?

This is fantastic news! I got my RIVO yesterday, and was very disappointed that European streaming product of the year RIVO did not have highres on Tidal, I thought it did, but now I am seeing hope here! Thanks for you efforts!! Looking forward to 8th of November!! :star_struck:

Regarding Tidal MQA; will you implement unfolding 1 like ifi Zen Stream and Roon core does in SW?
This would also have been a very nice feature, but releasing SW for highres FLAC is more important of course!

I just installed the beta version of the Volumio update on a PC connected to my Pro-Ject DAC.

When playing from the Tidal app using Tidal Connect, it behaves in the expected Tidal way.
Albums available in both Hi-Res and mqa will be played as Hi-Res no matter if the mqa version is in higher resolution.
E.g. https://tidal.com/browse/album/217554095
Albums available only as mqa will be played as such.
E.g. https://tidal.com/browse/album/2400318
However, if played from the Tidal embedded in Volumio, both will be played as mqa.
From there, albums only available as Hi-Res will be played as redbook.
E.g. https://tidal.com/browse/album/121047424
So, in a way you actually CAN choose between Hi-Res and mqa.
You just have to choose the right place to play from - and keep track of which albums are available in which formats.
Not the most elegant way, but you get access to both mqa and the albums only available in Hi-Res (there are certainly quite a few of my favourites).
Now, I just hope that Pro-ject will get their act together and implement these updates as well in their customised version of Volumio.

Hi!

Can you tell at what time?
Then I don’t need to check all the time;-)

Expectations set for today!

@mich it’s out now :wink:

This release took longer than anticipated since some devices cannot be updated straight via OTA (because of PI5 support). But now it’s live

Enjoy!

Great news!! Thanks!!

Updated my Volumio Rivo streamer:
I see that playing from Tidal App (Tidal connect) I get FLAC 192kHz played on DAC (Dire Straits, Sultans of swing).
Same track played via Volumio iOS app “only” plays 44.1kHz on same track.
I guess the Volumio iOS app must be updated too to get HighRes Tidal here, or is a hidden setting that I must apply?

Cheers, Tom

Fantastic news! Players updated and are now able to stream hi-res FLAC from Tidal via Tidal Connect (from mobile or desktop Tidal apps).

A big thank you to the Volumio team for all the hard work put into this and, in effect (I believe), being the first out in the market amongst all 3rd party systems with this functionality!

As @TBM mentions, will we be able to access the same FLAC (Max Quality) Tidal source albums from within the native Volumio UI in the future? That is, from either the mobile (iOS/Android) apps or the browser interface?

Native TIDAL Integration with FLAC support is not available as of now, but we are working to enable it as soon as possible. From what we know at the moment no update is needed, we will keep you posted on this.

Thanks for following up on this!
The Volumio iOS app sounds actually better on same track (if same kHz) than Tidal App, so looking forward to this! Always after max fidelity!

One strange thing I noticed when testing (MQA is set to Off)…
iOS volumio app - Sources menu - Sound Quality:
Selecting “Highest Possible” on Sultans of swing: 44.1kHz
Selecting “Hi-Res”: 48kHz
Selecting: “Lossless”: 48kHz

Kind of weird that “Highest Possible” is lower than the two others…

The Tidal iOS app have only 3 playback quality levels: Low, High and Max (on HiFi+ subscription)
Volumio have 5 levels in sound quality, perhaps a mapping problem?

Strange thing 2:
If I start on hi-res playlist (Hi-Res FLAC - 24bit/192kHz) in Tidal app with FLAC 192khz to DAC, then start up Volumio iOS app OR web interface while Tidal app is playing: I can now do a “Volumio take over” and actually play FLAC HiRes 192kHz from Volumio if I only click next song… This is true also if closing Tidal app. If I in Volumio stop song and go back to hires playlist and select an other song, I am back to 44.1 again…

Cheers, Tom

I’m just a bit curious/worried, if mqa will still be available to choose then?
(when a track/album is available in both formats)
I suppose, it is not entirely up to Volumio, but also depends on what Tidal makes possible…
