Tidal connected but does not play

Volumio Primo v3.703
I have a premium account
I have a tidal account
The Tidal icon appears, and I can search Tidal and find the track I want but it does not play.

When I click “play” nothing happens at all.

I can play successfully from my fileserver as usual.

Tidal plays on my android phone via the Tidal app.

I’ve tried on both the Volumio android app and the web interface, but neither actually play anything.

I’ve tried rebooting Volumio, but no luck.

I would suggest to upgrade to the latest stable version V3.818 first.

I am now on version 3.819

Sadly still the same problem

I’ve attached the error message
Screenshot from 2025-08-16 12-15-44

latest version is V3.832
Try with a few different tracks and set Sound Quality to Hi-Res.
If that still doesn’t work post a log and copy the generated URL here.

now on system 3.832
set to hi-res
attempted multiple different tracks
sadly still no noise, just the error message
Tidal is working on my phone Tidal app when connected to the same 192.168.1 network, although volumio is on ethernet

I see these errors in your log, which I have never seen before on this forum:

Failed to retrieve real stream URL Could not get TIDAL Stream URL: failed to get stream from provider tidal: rpc error: code = PermissionDenied desc = failed to get track playback info: got 401: {"status":401,"subStatus":5003,"userMessage":"Requested quality is not allowed in user's subscription"}
Aug 17 16:57:00 lounge volumio[847]: STREAMING PROXY: Error: Failed to retrieve proper real streamUrl: {"success":false,"error":"Could not get TIDAL Stream URL: failed to get stream from provider tidal: rpc error: code = PermissionDenied desc = failed to get track playback info: got 401: {\"status\":401,\"subStatus\":5003,\"userMessage\":\"Requested quality is not allowed in user's subscription\"}"}

What the Error Means:

  • 401 Unauthorized: TIDAL’s servers rejected your request because of permission issues.
  • subStatus 5003: This specifically points to a restriction based on your subscription tier.
  • userMessage: “Requested quality is not allowed in user’s subscription” — You tried to play a track in a higher audio quality (like HiFi or Master), but your plan doesn’t support it.

It looks like you don’t have a paid TIDAL subscription, which means you can browse and search tracks, and possibly stream at standard quality. But playback in higher quality formats like HiFi or Master isn’t allowed on your current plan, that’s why you’re seeing this error.

@devgianlu, @DED any other idea?

thanks - I appreciate your comments

I have a current account but it’s part of my daughter’s subscription. Weird that it works fine on my android phone app (who listens to hi-res on a phone?).

I will play with the configs but it looks like I either give up or get my own sub.
