Stream from volumio to network

Hello,

I was wondering if volumio allows streaming to another device. Usually I use volumio as a player connected to my home stereo (with dedicated DAC), but as volumio already holds a library, it would be nice to be able to make the library accessible through network. Afaik mpd offers a remote player mode, but dlna or other services would come in handy as well.

Visualized:

Now:
NAS -> (nfs) -> Raspberry with DAC running volumio -> (analogue cable) -> home stereo
or
External Hard drive -> (USB) -> Raspberry with DAC running volumio -> (analogue cable) -> home stereo

Question:
NAS -> (nfs) -> Raspberry with DAC running volumio -> (common network protocol) -> network device
or
External Hard drive -> (USB) -> Raspberry with DAC running volumio -> (common network protocol) -> network device

Thx.

edit: added use case so question is not limited to media originating from NAS

Hi h0nd,
I’m not clear whether this is the same, but I often listen music with a Bluetooth headphone which is connected to my mobile and on the mobile I use BubbleUPnP. I haven’t be sure whether the music is streamed from my little toy (Volumio) or if it comes from my NAS direct, because I also have Twonky running. But however, in respect to that this also works with radios I think the music must be streamed from my little toy. What is nice is that once I got the stream on my mobile, I still can play other music in parallel via my Hifi.

Hi Axel,

Thanks for reading.
I just downloaded a UPnP client on my phone. The client displays volumio as a ‘renderer’, but not as a ‘content directory’. So I can not play music indexed and streamed by volumio using UPnP. My NAS does indeed offer UPnP itself, but I’d rather use volumio, as volumio can access different sources (and my aim would be to be able to stream it) such as media located on an attached hard drive.

edit2: BubbleUPnP can not see volumio as well

bump in hope…

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Volumio does what you want right now. To do something similar, I ended up getting a second pi. I use a good dac into my hifi, but on the back porch or in the basement, I have a pi with a cheap usb dongle DAC and a cheap Amazon chip amp.

Not exactly what you want, but they both pull from the same library on my NAS. Volumio is awesome and has prompted me to get serious about sitting down and re-ripping my library all into FLAC which I’ve been putting off for too long.

Not sure how broad the protocols are supported, but imho there’s at least two options to achieve this:

  1. SnapCast; simple, easy to configure
  2. PulseAudio; should be simple as well and has been there for quite some time (NB: I have no experience setting this up)

The only thing you need to investigate is which network device do you want to use and how tech-savvy are you in terms of installing third-party apps. I’m not sure if there’s a such a thing as a common network protocol for streaming audio.

Old post but this could be the answer.

VLC can stream Volumio library. In the menu, go to Network - Local Network. Volumio should already be there.

It works with flac but you can’t see cover images.
