I just received my new Volumio Mini86 and cannot get it to recognize my SMSL M8 xmos DAC via USB connection. In Volumio, the only Output Device listed is “PCH”. I have combed through the forum topics and tried every listed fix (reboots, etc.) but cannot get the SMSL M8 to show up in the Volumio Audio Output Device menu. The SMSL M8 shows a USB connection from the Volumio via USB. I see SMSL M8 in the list of Volumio compatible DAC’s, which makes this all the more frustrating. Is there a way to initiate the USB output in SSH? Or am I doing something wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, this is quite strange actually… I own the same DAC and it always worked with my PI.
The only part where I had troubles was it suspend mode, which happened after some minutes of no-use (and the device was de-listed).
Try to change the USB port you use, and try to select it immediately after connecting it.
Let me know
Yes, I tried using different USB ports, different variations (rebooting both either/or Volumio Mini86 and SMSL M8 each port change), but still only “PCH” listed as Output Device under Playback Options in the menu. I’m quite baffled.
I did a check and just noticed my Volumio Mini86 came with Volumio V 2.201 dated June 14th 2017. The latest Volumio download for X86 is listed as V 2.285 dated July 10th. Could this be the problem?
We are about to release a new image for the Mini86, which maybe solves your problem.
It’s a pity I just sold my M8 and can’t try if that works with the new release.
I fear that we will need a newer kernel for it (its under testing now). I can help you make it work but first I need to know your skills and if you’re willing to try some experimental (therefore potentially unstable) tricks
Yes, I would like to implement a workaround until the new kernel is released. I am not a hardcore coder, but have done similar things via ssh in the past as I have used a Squeezebox Touch for the last few years. Thanks again for your assistance, Michelangelo.
Allright, so let’s try the less invasive option first.
Go to dev page and enable test mode, as explained here:
volumio.github.io/docs/User_Man … dates.html
Then update your Mini, first to 2.276 and then to 2.294.
Restart and let me know if that fixes your problem
Ok, enabled Test Mode, updated to V2.276 and then updated to V2.294. Rebooted to V2.294 but only change is now “HDA Intel PCH” listed as the only choice for Output Device under Playback Options in the menu (earlier version read “PCH”). SMSL M8 DAC still sees a signal via USB cable but no sound output.
Hi !
I got this dac and I’ve problem using it with DSD files.
If I use the DoP option i can ear a lot of noise and music playing at very low level (even with volume 100%).
If I use the DSD DIRECT option I can hear a lot of noise from the speakers at the highest volume (possibly breaking them!).
I used to play succesfully In another system (based on ubuntu and mpd server) DSD files over PCM using the following MPD confinguration:
audio_output {
type “alsa”
name “BitPerfect”
device “hw:CARD=x20,DEV=0”
dsd_usb “yes”
mixer_type “hardware”
mixer_device “hw:CARD=x20”
mixer_control “analogue 1”
replay_gain_handler “mixer”
auto_resamble “no”
auto_channels “no”
auto_format “no”
}
Can you help me ?
I’ve the same problem with HiFi Berry DAC+ Pro…
