Screen flashes in DPMS off mode

I have a strange problem with my DIY player. Find a description here:

Background: recently, my DIY player was left switched on for 14 days while I was on holiday. When I returned home, I noticed that the display had a display error at the top edge. Of course, the top edge is relative on a round display, but I am referring to the screen orientation. The error occurred immediately when the player was switched on. It became more severe each day when the player was switched on. Interestingly, it then disappeared again after a while each time. I therefore suspect that the temperature has something to do with it. The screen becomes relatively warm after a while, but not hot.

Nevertheless, Waveshare was kind enough to send me a new screen. It is now installed, and since then, whenever the screen turns off after 300 seconds (via the touch display plugin), I see a slight flash of the screen every 2 seconds.

I have now reconfigured the screen using the Pi Screen Setup plugin. However, this did not improve.

I have now disabled the screen saver for the time being. I want to avoid this destroying my screen. That may have been the reason why the first screen broke, even though I never saw this flashing there. I still don’t see this now. The screen is a total mess but DPMS works like a charm.

I searched Google a lot and the most common answer I got was that the power supply could be the cause. I triple-checked this by trying other power supplies. Finally I checked with a lab power supply just to find out it never draws more than 2 A. So I#m pretty sure this isn’t the problem.

Anybody comming up with an idea?
