I had to update the RFID plugin to work with volumio 3, given the NodeJS versions changed wasn’t easy but managed to get it working using another library.
Also had to write a custom plugin to locally site to display the spinning vinyl. Thats just then shown via the standard touch display plugin showing a different url/port. It uses webhooks to detect when a song is playing/paused to spin or show stationary vinyl and shows album art in the middle. Same with track progress and track info all via webhooks.
Designed and 3d printed the speaker grills and coated them in fabric myself. I wanted to use veneer for the mounting plate inside but struggled with adhesion to 3d printed PLA but in V2 may look at other options.
This is awesome! What a cool idea. There is a lot of the ritual of listening to music that is missing from modern streaming. This lets you keep the benefits of the modern format while returning some of the ritual. I grew up in the 80s and 90s so there is a nostalgia factor that listening to my vinyl collection brings, but the work of finding and maintaining good copies of my favorite albums is a lot. I love that the RFID has cover art. Great concept and fantastic work on the implementation.
I’ll take a video as soon as I can of it in action.
Screen is this one below, just needs the appropriate lines adding to the config file for the pi and display works great. Naturally some cropping given its circular for the standard Volumio views we have but the vinyl display looks great.
Thanks for the feedback, totally agree theres something disconnected when its just browse, click and play. Whilst its not the same as an actual vinyl being chosen theres something nice about flicking through the mini albums, finding something you’d forgotten about and dropping it on the player.
Feels like a middleground of convenience, space saving and more of a physical interaction with the music.
