Hi
Really excited to start using Volumio to bring an old RPi back to life. However, really struggling to find solid information on WiFi dongle compatibility.
The 2B doesn’t have onboard WiFi so I’m using a known good TP-Link TL-WN823N. Wired is working really well with a USB DAC
Volumio however doesn’t seem to support the WiFi dongle.
Can I make that dongle work easily?
Is there a recommended plug n play alternative?
Any other suggestions really appreciated.
Thanks
There is an archived compatibility list here:
THIS THREAD IS ARCHIVED: IT IS NOW VERY RARE FOR WIFI ADAPTERS TO CAUSE PROBLEMS 1st June 2020
This thread will serve as reference to working\non working Wireless Adapters with Volumio. This way we can achieve better wireless dongle compatibility and give useful advices for people willing to buy a new one.
This post will be updated as soon as we have more reference. Please keep this thread tidy and post your informations with this pattern, adding as much informations as you can:
Adapter Na…
There is also a statement that wireless adapters rarely cause problems with Volumio.

I have had many problems with usb wifi dongles. The major issue is the need for volumio to set up a hot spot , which doesn’t work with some. From memory the list of supported adapters was very short and none were available in the UK. The work around is set up Volumio with wired ethernet ( even if a dongle is plugged in wired takes precedence) you can fully set up everything including selecting wifi network and password. Then shutdown and restart with the wired ethernet removed.
I am using a Rpi 2 with a DAC HAT and an early usb wifi branded as wiPi and everthing works well with Volumio 4. During the Development of Volumio 4 the hot spot didn’t work ( so I used the work around) I sent several log files and thanks to Nerd this was fixed at some point. He might have some advice.

Thanks - when i slide the enable button on the WiFi settings it switches itself back off again before i have change to pick any SSID. It’s like it tries to start the service then fails.
Hi.
I have a RPi2B and a EDIMAX BPSCA EW-7811UN - CS25861 USB adapter; it works with no issue
Does the Pi 2 have another USB port?
Maybe try using a different port and see if the behaviour is the same.

Hmmm, I see quite a few people having trouble with that device. An example:
