Problems at every first startup - VOLUMIO-RASPBERRY PI3B

Good morning, everyone,
as per title I use volumio on raspberry pi3 model b and use it via IOS APP and remotely with windows pc.
The problem I am experiencing is that every day when I first turn on my raspberry, after the beep, when I start something ( from my hard drive connected to the raspberry ), the songs freeze
The moment a song freezes volumio is not usable either from the app or remote control. I have to necessarily restart the device ( I can do this only at the moment when the song restarts and volumio is usable again ) or even force close it and then restart it.
Normally the second boot works properly and gives no problems, I don’t understand what could be due to.
The system is always up to date, and yesterday I reset to factory settings to reconfigure it again, it seemed to work, but today same story…
It is used via wifi to be controlled, and the internet line works perfectly
I thank you in advance for your help

Buongiorno a tutti,

  • Please confirm via a browser if the rPi is completely powered on and ready. Only seen this behavior if I start a track to soon and the rPi was not ready yet (started to play song even though toast messages are still popping up).
  • Which Version of Volumio are you running?

I thought it was enough to wait for the volumio startup sound to play the first song
the version of volumio I use is 3.423 released on 24 jan '23.
can it happen that volumio is ready but the raspberry is not? It would still seem strange to me that then when I turn it off and on again it works 90% of the time.
normally the volumio power up sound comes after a little more than a minute, but if waiting 3-4 minutes solves the problem I will gladly wait

When I am using the rpi3 I always wait for approx. a minute after the startup noise. Which seems to do the trick for me. Let’s hope it solves your issue to.

thanks, I’ll try to do that then!
maybe let me know if you feel like doing this test: play a song right after the volumio start sound, and maybe change it while it’s playing.
That way maybe we get some extra feedback

I did, but my rPi3 doesn’t seems to care much. I can’t replicate this error on demand.
I do have to admit, this is a very bare installation ( no plugins) as I am only using it for problem shooting.

Is your rPi connected via WiFi or ethernet?

I also have no plugins on my device.
Mine is connected via wifi

Then try the same with a Ethernet cable. It might be possible that the WiFi connection isn’t ready yet or occupied with tasks.
Are you using a WiFi dongle?
is there more connected to USB?

I will try using the Ethernet cable then!
i don’t use a wifi dongle
there are DAC and hard disk connected to the usb of my raspberry, nothing else

Hi,
Looks like an issue with the power supply not powerful enough to power the HDD. I would advise to use a self powered USB hub in the middle

I am currently waiting for a linear power supply to arrive.
Could it solve the problem?
I have more than a TB of music in my HDD ( western digital elements ), it is hard to find a good replacement.

maybe an ssd could solve the problem?

Get a powered USB hub, connect your external USB harddrive to the hub and then the Pi to the hub.

I am waiting for the usb hub to arrive.
Yesterday I tried it with both an SSD and a pendrive and everything worked perfectly.
I will let you know as soon as I try my hdd with usb hub.

Good day all,
With Usb Hub the device works perfectly.
clearly it’s a bit inconvenient to have to activate/deactivate the usb port every time.
I think I will still invest with an ssd hard drive.
