Problem with Volumio 3 and Raspdac

Hi,
I have bought a second hand RPI based streamer – Raspdac – It came preconfigured with an Volumio image from Audiophonics that included the necessary drivers, configurations, etc for the on/off button, the OLED screen and a remote control.

The Volumio version was version 2.861 and I decide to update to version 3.512. The update actually did a fresh install which resulted that the screen is black, the on/off button works but it flashes constantly when turned on.

I have found a plugin named Audiophonics ON/OFF which I have installed but I cant activate it. I have also installed a plugin called Audiophonics Evo Sabre which configures the DAC. This works fine.

The setup is:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2
Volumio: 3.512
I-Sabre V4 ES9023
I have no idea what the model of the screen. It is OLED 16x2 screen.

Information on the Raspdac is found at AUDIOPHONICS RASPDAC Kit DIY Streamer for Raspberry Pi 2 / 3 & DAC - Audiophonics

The Raspdac is functional and I can stream music just fine. However, I would very much like to get the screen and the On/Off button to work.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Update: I just discovered that it is not possible to shut down Volumio via the the user interface. It restarts instead.
Included logfile: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/zs6p8Lp.html

Update: Started over with a clean install of Volumio and installed Audiophonics ON/OFF which works fine. Still trying to figure out how the get the screen working.

BUMP! Seems like Audiophonics does not want to put in the work to create a new, official plugin specifically for this - should the new “MPD OLED” pluging work with the Winstar OLED screen?
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but thinking is better than opening a new one

Did you check this with Audiophonics or is this just your guess?
Perhaps @olivier_audiophonics can share a light on this?

Thanks for the reference - it was not meant as an aggressive call out - just from the fact that porting plugins to the current Volumio (Volumio 3?) requires a process and given that the old Raspdac plugin for the older Volumio (Volumio 2?) is not available, I am just guessing that Audiophonics does not prioritize such work.

UNLESS
Like I said, maybe the newer MPD OLED plugin should support it and I just need some kind of configuration profile. Or I have a broken screen!
Thanks!

have you looked here?

Holy crap - that looks like exactly what I am looking for - not sure why I did not find out on Google search - I do apologize for that. Thinking maybe I neglected to use “Volumio 3” instead of just “Volumio”, which gave me all the stuff for Volumio 2…

Thanks, will look into that

No clue if it will work, but on the Audiophoincs site it’s mentioned that the OLED version is no longer supported with Volumio 3. Hopefully this install will still work.
Unable to test it as i don’t have the hardware. :crossed_fingers:

Please check with olivier

Hello,
Unfortunately :

  • It is correct that we do not plan on releasing anything to make this work. This product has been discontinued long before Volumio3 even got out & I broke the last working unit we had ages ago.

  • None of the ressources that have been linked above, nor MPD OLED (as far as I know) will make this display work. Those are for graphical displays (fed by a pixel buffer). The display you have is a Winstar WEH001602A HD44780 character display (fed by an ASCII string).

  • It is supposed to be driven by a script like pydPiper but I have not used this for many years now and have no idea if it still works. I have seen people using it with Volumio 3 however I wouldn’t expect it to work out of the box on a latest version without a non-trivial amount of tinkering. This is the first thing you should try to have this display working.

  1. I assumed so! Like I said in a previous post, it was an statement of what it looked to me like facts, it was not meant as an aggressive call out! Nothing but love for Audiophonics here.

  2. Thanks - I consider myself technically proficient, but for some reason I did not realize the basic fact that is completely different technology. Thanks for taking the time to answer the question.

  3. At this point I could try to work to get pydPiper to work but quite frankly, you are right, it is not trivial. I will probably instead update my raspdac - the current Mini looks great.
