Problem with HiFiBerry Digi

I have a Pi 2 with a HiFiBerry Digi, and I’ve got Volumio 2 (0.979) installed.

My problem is that the optical output of the DAC doesn’t get turned on reliably. Sometimes yes, but mostly no. I can switch back to the headphone output, and verify that it’s playing music, but I don’t get anything out of the DAC’s optical output.

I had no problems like this with Volumio 1.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting this?
