The only thing you can oversize is the amps, nothing else.
The voltage can be ramped up till 5,15 - 5.2 V max.
Later this week I hope to hear how the Rivo sounds when it gets the power from the USB output of my AQ Powerquest. With my previous streamer I got very good results, even better than with the IFI PowerX, somewhat more natural details, with the PowerX it can get too much and too sharp sometimes.
Today the 5.5/2.1 to USB cable has arrived, and I have connected it to the Rivo and the USB port on the Audioquest Powerquest (powerblock) and yes, it sounds, imho, more pleasant than with the IFI Power X. The sharpness in some recordings is gone, violins sound more natural now with still lots of detail. Same results as with my previous streamer.
Thank you for your review, now Iām hesitating
Powerquest 2 could be a nice global addon for my audio/video setup indeed, but Iām a bit surprised that a surge protection device do better than an audiophile āplenty of top notch patentā device from ifi
in your set up the results might be different. As always, It would be best to listen first, if you have the possibility.
I am sorry I did not mention that the power going into the Powerquest (powerblock) is already very clean, because I have an electrical choke, a large and heavy transformer before the powerblock, that also works as a filter.
Hi Zojo. Alpha audio have said that although they thought the Primo sounded good, the power supply supplied was poor. What speakers were you using when you compared the ifi ipower x and sbooster with your Primo please ?
Wheaten, are you saying therefore that it is unlikely that the new Lineo5 power would bring any significant improvement to the sound quality of Primo v2 ?
Nope never said that, I think there will be improvement on the Primo.
But you previously said āKeep in mind that a well designed voltage circuit of your Streamer/DAC will filter out spikes and noise from the connected PSUā If you are now saying that you would expect the Lineo5 power supply to improve the sound of Primo 2 it surely implies that the voltage circuit of Primo 2 is not well designed ?
The primo has a well designed input filtering, but it has been reported that the primo benefits using a LPS. Just trying to give information as honest as possible.
To be honest I donāt hear the improvement.
I am aware that the chaps at Alpha Audio thought the power supply provided with the Primo 2 was poor and that another or other power supplies they used with it improved the sound. However you are saying that you have tried the Lineo5 with Primo 2 and you havenāt heard a difference. Is the latter statement correct ?
not with the Lineo5 as I havenāt one. tested with a different LPS.
- NAD D3045
- Focal Chorus
- Siltech Speaker cables.
Can I ask which one please ?
Ok thanks for your input Wheaten
@Chris_200 sorry for getting back late on this one.
I use Triangle comete 40th anniversary standmouth speakers.
Since swap from ifi ipower x to sbooster i changed my amp to second hand Roksan Caspian m2 and use it with Primo as a all in box.
I read the alpha audio testing/ measurement on power supply on Primo and others devices as stated earlier from ipower x to sbooster was hearable and much better calmness so absolutely worth it but rest of the system have to be good to.
I think that power supply upgrade as sbooster price range is the limit anybody can get out of it without breaking the bank for a high end power supply.
If you want more than you need to look further in price range for better build dac streamers e.g. auralic vega s1 , primare sc15 or eversolo a8
@Zojo You have a good system which no doubt helps you to hear the differences when you use different power supplies with your Primo.
My comments about the alpha audio testing actually applied to the Primo v2 which is a later model, so I am not sure if they also apply to the Primo Hifi version you have.
As you may know, Volumio now produce the Lineo5 LPS. I may try this in the future with my Volumio v2 streamer.
@Chris_200
I sold the hifi edition and got primo v2 second hand a little after i got Caspian m2 amp.
Sound quality with sbooster is great for the price thats for sure, rest of the system quality have to be good to hear the small changes as you say.
Cant say if the volumio power supply is good as sbooster but at similar price range there cant be so much quality differences.
Try to se if you can find sbooster or maybe farad 3 second hand then you reach the limit of what primo v2 can give.
In my opinion here next step will be either primare sc15 or auralic vega s1 but 2000-2100ā¬ is alot money so i stick with primo v2 until i get ārichā
@Zojo Did you notice any sound differences between the hifi edition and primo v2 ?
Thanks for advice about sbooster and farad 3, though I may be more likely to try the Lineo5 as it is made by Volumio and hopefully would work well with their streamers. Having said that, buying those suggested power supplies 2nd hand, is a good suggestion as any improvements realised would be a better value proposition than buying Lineo5 new.
I must say I was a little disappointed when I first purchased the Primo 2 as I could not really hear any notable difference from the Chromecast audio streamer I had before. This does not mean that the Primo v2 sound is not good, but I would have expected a significant improvement moving up from an inexpensive streamer such as Chromecast audio. I have found however, that Primo v2ās sound is as good as a Ā£650 Atoll CD player that I have recently purchased.
@Chris_200 the difference between hifi edition and Primo v2 was surely not day and night to honest, v2 is in my opinion a little more dynamic and slightly richer the hifi edition is great to but more mellow ishh but thats in my ears.
Both devices are great gear for the price with better power supply.
You will sure get better sq with the volumio lps than the stock smps but again if the rest of your system cant reproduce better than thats another āissueā
I spend alot of time on placing speakers correctly in my flat and more to win there than buying al kind of tweaks. Speaker cables, rca and xlr are small adjustment power supplies can change things but still minor if amp speakers aint up to it and of cause positioning of speakers.
Just go for the volumio power supply and enjoy the music
