Got a new Yamaha amplifier S801 with USB input that I’d like to use with my R Pi 3 via one of the Pi’s USB ports. Connected the Pi to the amp with a USB A to USB type B cord, but get no sound.
Lots of conflicting info out there! Eg, the Pi always outputs music through the USB ports, to needing to install a driver for the Yamaha, needing ALSA (?) etc.
Running Volumio 2.806.
Source music is an SSD connected to the Pi via one of the Pi’s other USB ports.
First, Volumio V2,xx is EOL, so out of support .
I would advise to upgrade to V3 or V4 (which is in it’s final Beta state).
A USB DAC needs to be selected from the playback option.
the Yamaha S801 clearly states that it only supports Windows and MAC.
If Yahama didn’t provide information to the Linux kernel group, it will become difficult.
Upgrade Volumio to version 3.832, the latest stable version.
I have a Khadas Tone 2 Board Kit DAC connected to Volumio via USB - Photo.
Connect the Raspberry Pi to the Yamaha via USB.
On the Yamaha amplifier, select the USB DAC playback source.
Then, in the General Playback Option section of the Raspberry Pi, select the Output Device (your device, i.e., the Yamaha, if available).
The Raspberry Pi will only play via the Yamaha USB DAC if the USB DAC source is selected on the Yamaha.
After switching the Yamaha amplifier’s source to a different source, the Raspberry Pi may not detect the Yamaha USB DAC.
Thanks for your advice! I’ve upgraded to v3.832, but unfortunately I can’t access the r Pi now through wireless, so no music at all, I’ve set the wireless network and connected successfully, configured via ethernet, but Volumio cannot find the device wirelessly.
In your router, create two networks with different names for the 2.4 and 5 Ghz networks
Flash a new, clean version of Volumio 3.832 onto your SD card.
Boot Volumio from the SD card on your Raspberry.
Connect to your Raspberry via LAN and reconfigure your Wi-Fi network with your router.
Check that you entered the Wi-Fi security password correctly.
For some reason wireless was set to Off! I can connect to it wirelessly now! Yay! Confirmed that my HiFi Berry digital out still functions, and it does!
Success via USB!!! Once I set Playback Option > Audio Output: I2S DAC Off, Output Device listed the Yamaha USB DAC as an option, selected that and it works! Sounds fantastic, though I can’t say if it’s better than Digi coax in. Using USB IN frees up the single coax input on the amp for something else.
THANK YOU so much for your assistance. Frustrating day for sure, but it’s all good now
Very good USB DAC in Yamaha A-S801
USB DAC function supports 2.8MHz - 5.6MHz DSD native resolution and PCM 384kHz - 32 bit reproduction
High efficiency ESS 32bit DAC (ES9010K2M)
Digital signal indicator shows DSD and PCM playback formats and sampling frequencies.
Yes, that’s one reason I wanted to use USB IN, though I’m not sure if coax in uses the same ESS DAC or not. I have a lot of 24 bit/192kHz FLAC files (mostly Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd), sounds great!
