PCB design considerations for Raspberry Pi-based audio projects

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in the hardware side of Raspberry Pi-based audio projects, particularly when moving from a development-board setup to a custom PCB.

One thing I’m curious about is how much attention you give to power-supply design and PCB layout in audio applications. Switching regulators, grounding, return-current paths, and the placement of digital and analog circuitry can all affect how a board behaves, especially when audio components share a power source with a processor or other digital hardware.

I’m also wondering whether anyone here has designed a custom PCB for a Volumio-based setup, such as a DAC interface, audio control board, or a dedicated power-supply board.

For anyone exploring the PCB side of these projects, PCBCool has some technical guides on PCB power-plane design and related manufacturing considerations:

A couple of questions for the community:

  • Have you noticed any practical difference from changing the power-supply layout or grounding on a Raspberry Pi audio setup?
  • For a custom audio PCB, would you prioritize separating analog and digital sections, improving power filtering, or something else first?

I’d be interested to hear what has actually worked in your builds.

both are extremely important, if done properly you can obtain excellent results, if not done properly you can expect poor results
