Hello to everybody
Im trying to boot from nvme.
I followed the guide updating bootloader
Hardware:
-Raspberry pi5 8gb
-official 21w power supply
-Allo digione signature
-waveshare pcie to m.2 board with ssd wd 850 black 2tb
Hdmi monitor
Lan cable with internet connected to rpi5
Sd card
System work flawlessly with sd card. After fresh install of latest volumio version 3.832, i selected “install on nvme” in volumio /system menu and completed installation. I powered off system, removed sdcard and booted. Unfortunately i got “volumio-player preparing startup” on monitor, but nothing happens then.
Any suggestion?
Unfortunately, the WD Black SN850 2TB NVMe SSD is not recommended for use with the Raspberry Pi 5 due to compatibility issues with its controller chip.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The SN850 uses a Phison controller, which has been reported to cause problems on the Pi 5’s PCIe interface.
- Many WD drives, including the SN850 and SN850X, may require an extra SUSCLK clock signal that the Pi 5 doesn’t provide.
- Users have experienced issues like the drive not being recognized at all, or failing to boot, even when using compatible NVMe HATs.
Please have a look at this topic, which offers working combinations:
Oh yes, i bought nvme looking to the wrong compatibility list! Just tested againg with a samsung 970 evo plus and it works fine. The boot time is not so fast, around 34 seconds with jist radio paradise and i2s audio output plugins.
You can add waveshare to the hats that works fine.
but that barely scratches the surface. At the time of writing, there are exactly 25 models including revisions from Waveshare alone, plus way more than 50 near-identical clones flooding Aliexpress. Providing clear hardware details would save the community a lot of guesswork.
Kind Regards,
