No DSD playback after update

Hi,
I just upgraded my Raspberry CM4 based Volumio box to latest release (3.757) from 3.396.

Now I have issue where DSD64 files cannot be played anymore. I have Rotel RC-1572 MKII amp connected directly to USB. Before update, DSD playback worked. Now I only get white noise, if I select direct DSD as method and if I select DoP, then there is a silence, Volumio plays the file, but no sound. In Direct DSD mode, amp thinks that the input is PCM 32bit/88.2KHz, which is not correct. In DoP, it shows 24bit/176.4KHz, which should be correct, I believe. But there is no sound.

Mixer is disabled, so that couldn’t be the infamous 100% volume problem too.

Any thoughts, what went wrong and how to troubleshoot?

Edit: I think it worked before with DoP, because it seems that the Ti DAC that is used in my Rotel does not support Direct DSD even if it says it in stream0 file.

Hello!

Can you please send a log link to: support at volumio dot org ?

Hello Davide,

The link for logs is here: http://logs.volumio.org/volumio/eYAdDab.html

I think it worked before with DoP fallback, because it seems that my DAC does not support Direct DSD.

After some searching, it seems that this Texas Instruments DAC does not support Direct DSD nor DoP. For some reason I assumed that DoP decodes DSP and resamples it automatically to PCM, but I assumed wrong - PCM is used only for transport.

But - as I understand, if the DAC does not support DSD, Volumio should automatically convert stream to PCM? So the numbers that my amp shows are actually correct for DSD64. But why the white noise then? Even if I disable mixer, there is no change.

Hello!

The previous 3.396 version of the software for the RPI used a different kernel (5.10.x). The latest release, version 3.757, now uses the 6.1.x kernel to support the RPI5.

It’s possible that in your specific case, there might be compatibility issues between the 6.1 kernel and the Rotel DAC.
My first suggestion is to check for an updated firmware version for the Rotel amplifier. If updating the firmware doesn’t resolve the issue, try enabling Volumio’s TEST mode and downloading the latest beta release, which uses the 6.6.x kernel.
This newer version may help resolve the problem.

Here’s how to enable TEST mode:

Hi Davide,

Now my Volumio is on latest beta release with 6.6.56 kernel version. But the issue remained the same. When I try to play DSD file, I hear only noise :frowning:

I saved another set of logs, maybe it helps troubleshooting:

Hello!

If you’ve already confirmed that the Rotel amp firmware is up-to-date, the next step would be to revert to the previous working setup by reinstalling version 3.396.
Please reach out to me directly at: support at volumio dot org
I’ll provide you with the IMG file for that version

Thank you
