New 3.779 install, Volumio unresponsive when entering Wifi password (impossible to finish)

Hi

I have a Raspberry Pi 3, running the previuous Volumio version. I used a Wifi dongle, working out of the box (specific model purchase)
For Volumio 3.779, i wanted to switch to an eMMC instead of a SD Card, so i am booting from the eMMC.

Problem: i start to configure Volumio with name, DAC (I2S, Allo Piano 2.1), then choose my Wifi network and invariably, Volumio start to be unresponsive to the point i have to abandon.
When restarting, Volumio will not go into the config mode anymore, i have to reflash to experiment the same issue again.

I think it is the 1st time experimenting that.
Over the years, this part was a breeze usually.

Is there anybody having the same issue ?
Any tips to be able to continue after Volumio being unresponsive & restart?

If nothing possible, i will try to clone my old 32Go SD card into the 16Go new eMMC this weekend with the tool mentionned somewhere else in the forum (Free Data Recovery software | Paragon Backup & Recovery Community Edition)

Hey @laluciol6990,

This is something that has not been previously seen on v3.779. Tested in AP mode initial setup on Pi3, 4, 400, 5 with no glitch.

Please describe every and each step, spare no detail.

Kind Regards,

Background:
Hardware: Raspberry Pi 3, with USB dongle working out of the box with previous Volumio. Allo Kali reclocker, Allo Piano 2.1 DAC
Network: 1 Internet box + 1 repeter, delivering 2 SSID, 1 for 5GHz named with a given name “Internet-ISP”, 1 for 2.4GHz named “Internet-ISP-Stable”, because 2.4GHz has longer range

1st step: Flash the eMMC with Volumio 3.779
2nd step: Plug the eMMC on the Volumio hardware (previously running Volumio prior to kernel 6.6 update, don’t remember the name)
3rd step: Connect to the Volumio hotspot
// here i need to mention: “Volumio” network could appear, as well as “Volumio-2028B” or similar [i am not at home at the moment] //
// Sometimes, connecting to the hotspot would not launch the “captive connection” and wouldn’t start the configuration //
4th step: Entering the hardware name “Volumio” so he can later be accessible on http://volumio.local
5th step: Select the DAC: I2S = ON, DAC = Piano 2.1
6th step: Choose the Wifi network “Internet-ISP-Stable” to make sure i am on the 2.4GHz
// usually, Volumio start to show the “refresh symbol” for every after i start to type something. Sometimes, it is even before i start to type something//
// I have tried to configure Volumio from:
a MacOS laptop to the hotspot
a iOS phone to the hotspot
a iOS tablet to the hotspot
a Linux laptop to the hotspot
Always the same behavior//

I could later move the hardware to be able to have a cable connection, but only in a few days.
I could also remove the Wifi dongle to try out if helpful.

Regards

Hey @laluciol6990,

The difference is that I am setting up I2C DAC later. I am aware of some Piano 2.1 hiccup posted in a community thread.

Can you test the theory that failing initial DAC config causes the issue?

Kind Regards,

Hi.

  1. i tried to start 3.779 without I2S dac and went quickly through the steps: also didn’t work
  2. i tried the previous version of Volumio: i could configure with an I2S dac Piano 2.1
  3. i tried again 3.779 without I2S dac and went slowly through each step to see if there was a timing error. (going too quickly). I waited until the icons of the wifi signal appeared (not the case before because i was too quick to choose the channel “Internet-ISP-Stable”.
This time i could finish the configuration, looked OK. Rebooted still Ok.
…but then enabled the I2S DAC and Piano 2.1 and it went unresponsive…

So, timing to choose wifi (need to wait for the signal bars to appear) and ultimately, Piano 2.1 dac with the Kali reclocker.
Testing without the reclocker can be done, but only in a few days when i have the time to dismantle stuff.

Take care

Hi
I tried to flash a new sd card with 3.779 version downloaded from volumio website. The sd card doesn’t boot my rpi4 and my rpi5.
So, I flashed 3.703 version. It works fine on rpi4. But impossible to update to 3.779. Nothing happens.
The sd car I use on my volumio 4 was already at the 3.779 version, it continues to work fine on rpi4, and il it works on a rpi5 2gb too.
Regards.
Gabriel

Do you also have Piano 2.1 DAC?
