Mixer Name Setting

I have a pi and allo boss dac. My mixer is set to hardware. Mixer name is set to analogue? What does this mean, should it be set to digital?

The volume control only seems to work properly if set to digital.

Thanks for replying. That is hardware for the allo boss but is a different setting to mixer name?
