Jitter Performance of CM5 / external clocks

I am building a CM5 based streamer.
This will be my first venture into running an i2s DAC. I have read several discussions on the limitations of the Raspberry clocks, especially with i2s DACs:

Can someone give me some pointers

  • whether this problem is significant (when using i2s vs using USB out)
  • if yes, links to how to address the issue by i.e. running the CM5 off an external clock (I think this is called slave mode)
