Interested and opinionated

I would like to set up a local music server with a wifi music player feeding audio to RCA aux inputs on my stereo stack(s). The server will be a Linux box. The core of my target player is a Beaglebone Black feeding this DAC:

I’ll be hanging out here to see if this is a good platform and compare to the alternatives.

I am opinionated, but my opinions can change.

This project looks like what I’ve been looking for.

I use this same configuration! And it works pretty good. I like a lot the ODAC, philosophically speaking.
But now for the same price you can get better (this involves a little of DIY…)

See here:

You mean this one?

Do you have implementation notes online?
You think this is better sounding than the JDS labs odac board?

I will be hanging out learning about volumio.

Yep, plus the XMOS USB Receiver mentioned on the article

Thank you. This will be my reference/target system. I’ll be learning about volumio and hope to set this up at home.

So I’ve changed my mind. Looking over the host devices, a Cubox-i4-pro looks like the host I want.

The specs say

  • Optical S/PDIF Audio Out
  • Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps
  • WiFi 11n/BlueTooth
  • 2x USB 2.0 Host
  • HDMI 1080p

Everything I want in a Volumio player box in one package.

So my plan as of this minute is [Cubox-i4-pro] – toslink – [Tascam US-366]

Excellent choice, sir!
