Sure but @jacobacci did state in the otter thread that he had a solution, but PM seams not to be an option here, so that’s why I postede there
OK now I can send PM
Anyone sussed in installing the Volumio directly to the Project Stream box Ultra??
I believe, I got it installed but with no working network connection (see my earlier posts), so that’s not to much use.
Please let us know, whether you have better luck or not:-)
I will keep you posted.
Just for fun I installed Volume in a Pi4 yesterday, what a difference to the interface on Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra…so if I can get that working I am HAPPY
Just to let you now I have new installed Volumio (VERSION: 3.812 RELEASE DATE: 13-05-2025) on the Stream Box S2 Ultra .
RJ45 network connection is working
Spotify Connect is working (It now needs a PREMIUM subscription to run Spotify)
Have not tested wireless
You don’t need a premium subscription for Spotify. You do need it for Tidal/Qobuz/multiroom/…
I would very much appreciate, if you pinned out the procedure used a bit:-)
Then I will try again - I wouldn’t mind skipping a few trial and error sessions;-)
Well it did not work until I put in the premium subscription.
All other streaming services need a premium subscription so why not Spotify.
Spotify was a plugin developed by community members like yourself. When the original creator of the plugin stepped out due to major changes made by Spotify, Volumio stepped up and took over the development. It has never been part of any subscription.
Got the instructions from @jacobacci
Get current Volumio image
I used Balena Etcher to flash over a MacBook
Connected a monitor to the HDMI (just to see what is going on)
Connected mini-USB to MAC and push the boot bottom on the backside.
Balena Etcher found the Computer Module right away
Select source and destination for the volumio image
let it cook for some time - (might need a cold restart after 60min, mine did)
If you do a shutdown in the Volumio GUI the Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra will not completely shutdown, you need to push the power bottom on the front too.
Thanks:-)
Actually, I tried before seeing your description - and succeeded!
Now, I’m left wondering what went wrong earlier…
(could be the earlier version of Volumio)
I’ll try not loosing too much sleep over it;-)
I did it from a Windows PC also using Balena Etcher.
I had to start the procedure a couple of times, before it discovered the Computer Mododule (the Project Streambox i.e.).
First time I tried flashing it, it ended with a failure.
I guess you should just try again…
Now I’m wondering if it would be possible to change the RPi CM3 in the Project Streambox with a CM4S - and if it would make any difference?
Right now, Volumio seems to be running quite stable.
Tidal Connect is working (which was my mail goal to achieve).
Search in Tidal (in Volumio app and web interface) seems much better than in the Pro-Ject version - where I could type in an artist’s name perfectly correct and still it would either not be shown at all or somewhere down a long list of other artist, with only remotely similar names…
And the system software can now be updated.
I somehow have stronger belief, that the Volumio system is more likely than Pro-ject to get the option of handling whatever MQA streaming service Lenbrook will end up offering:-)
(MQA haters: please don’t get started…)
The only drawbacks I have met so far:
- Shutdown from app/web interface not working (haven’t actually tried restart).
- WiFi not working - I’ll probably try with a USB dongle at some point, although I prefer to use cabled network anyway (and have no issue doing so).
All in all, I can life with this:-)
Thanks to everyone who tried to help!
For all those struggling to keep their StreamBox alive, there is a cheap alternative that to my ears sounds significantly better (YMMV). It is the Odroid N2. I found the Odroid N2 to sound better than either the StreamBox or a Raspberry.
The Odroid has not received the 3.812 update yet. It is likely to get it through community portings though (-> hint to the devs).
