Help: Lost connection to Volumio?

Hi,

This morning, I was unable to connect to my RPi3B Volumio using the IP address I’ve been using: [http://192.168.1.211/]. It’s also not visible via the mobile app.

The device seems fine—I’ve hard rebooted it, and it plays the startup chime once it’s running. I checked the SD card on my personal PC, and it’s not corrupted. I’ve connected a monitor and keyboard, and it’s responsive, but I still can’t access it through the same IP.

A couple of days ago, I vaguely remember switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, which might have caused the issue. That’s the only change I can think of.

I have terminal access and would appreciate any help in reconnecting to Volumio.

Thanks

your eth0 address is 169.254.71.246
did you try it?

Yeah, it times out and i can’t get a response when i ping it.

Seems your using 2 subnets, which causes issues.

  • Wireless running on 192.168.1.xxx
  • Wired running on 169.254.71.xxx

Since your running a macbook-pro, I expect you run it wireless. Both subnets can’t find each other.

Ok, that makes sense.

I have the Raspberry pi plugged in via RJ45 to the router as i wanted to minimise streaming lagg. It’s usually tucked behind the sofa which seemed to compromise it’s Wifi ability.

I’m unsure how to resolve this, would you be able to walk me through a fix i could do through the command line?

You can’t do this via the cmd line. It’s your router setup. You have configured WL with a different submask.

Ok, so I if im understanding you correctly. I need the subnet masks to match, doing this via the router. It’s not as simple as disabling the Wireless to remove conflict?

nope, as you’re Macbook is running a WL connection, you still can’t connect between WL and W

Ok, so you’re saying the issue is my macbook is connecting to the router via WL? Following this logic I have to connect the same way to the router the Raspberry Pi is connected. Is that correct?

yes, Or you look at the manual of your router how to change the ip of your WL network. So they have both the same subnet.

An IP address beginning with 169.254 is called an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) IP address . APIPA is a feature in operating systems that allows a device to automatically assign itself an IP address if it can’t get one from a DHCP server. Addresses used for APIPA range from 169.254. 0.1 to 169.254.

Ok, im definitly reaching the limit of my networking knowledge. The only thing that confuses me about @Wheaten 's comment is: I’m also running a Home Assistant server which is also plugged into my router directly and i can administer through my WL connection without issue. Surely if that is possible, then I should be able to do the same with Volumio? Or am i missing something.

According to Gé remark, your router is not assigning an IP address to your Volumio device.
I’ll bet your Home Assistant has an IP in the range of 192.168.1.xxx?

Please check your network cable to the Router/Switch.

Not sure if you made any changes to the network settings in Volumio, If you did try to access Volumio again over Wifi and share a screenshot of your network setup in Volumio.
If not possible try to connect your Phone or MacBook to the hotspot of Volumio. SSID is named like volumio-xxxxx

Thank you @Wheaten and @gkkpch for all your help! After spending a day troubleshooting through router settings and the command line, I embarrassingly realised the issue was with the TP-Link powerline repeater that Volumio was connected to. I’ve replaced it, and everything is now back up and running as expected. I can also confirm that it’s properly using the LAN connection now.
