HDMI Sound: Adjust AV Receiver‘s volume

Hi,

I recently switched to Volumio because it has Tidal Connect integration. So far, I’m very satisfied, but I have two questions for you:

  1. My setup consists of an RPi3 connected to an AV receiver via HDMI. I want to use the AV receiver’s DAC. From a sound quality perspective, is there any reason against this, or would it be better to use a coaxial or optical connection instead?

  2. Assuming I stick with HDMI for sound output: How can I configure the system so that when using AirPlay or Tidal Connect from my phone, the AV receiver’s volume control is used? Meaning, when I adjust the volume directly on my iPhone (e.g., in the Tidal app), the AV receiver’s volume changes accordingly.

a) Is this possible via HDMI CEC?

b) Alternatively, is there a way to run a script that controls the AV receiver via HTTP commands, for example?
